Shah Rukh Khan is worth a case study. With no extra ordinary acting abilities, or screen presence or filmi lineage he stands apart with a towering presence holding the industry attarcted to him and keep growing if not stagnating. In the new avatar, he has turned producer too.
Compared to early 90s or mid 80s, today the Hindi flm industry has not been able to deliver new comers or new trend setters.
Now films are produced with abject calculations on box office returns from the NRI audience and the masala is appropriately added to charm the pravasi lot.
NRIs straddle two worlds-the imposed Hollywood cinema tastes and Hindi films to satiate the the racial pangs of native pulls, delivered mostly by the new genre of orgasmic Karan Johar type movies.
