Pathetic

One word to describe the movie. John gets to showcase his wooden acting skills and he shows what an incompetent actor he is.

As for Anurag Kashyap, it clearly shows that he is one over-rated film maker (black friday became famous owing to other reasons and a friendly press) who manages to keep himself in the news by either praising others movies to the skies or talks about his personal crisis in his life. It is time he is consigned to the dust bin of cinema.

Come to think of it.. it almost beat RGV ke Aag in its absurdity

Welcome to the Genre of Arrogant Filmmaking!

i dont know if the film NO SMOKING is ahead of times or wot, but wat i understand is the film failed to communicate with the audience. film is a medium of communication in audio visual form & if it does not communicate a story or its idea than somewhere there is a flaw in storytelling by the director.
lets be very honest about it & not get carried away by the fear of not being so called intellectuals. i adore anurag. he is a genius. but if he fails to communicate an idea lets accept it.
u see when earlier shyam benegal etc started making films decades ago people laughed at their films. so wat happened is we got 2 tribes in cinema making, commercial films & art films. its the same now. they failed with the masses. now may be satyajit ray is an icon to be worshipped but than way back when his films were released they were not mass appeal films. but as times changed the group of people increased who identified with satyjit ray, shyam benegal kind of cinema. so may be we can say these filmmakers were ahead of times & today after so many years they hav got some audience in public domain.
same is the case of anurag & his films. his films r on the wierd wild side of filmmaking. he tells his story in a very high intelectual fashion. its like a complex puzzle & requires lots of brain to be used. his films r the genre of 'modern art'. like modern art is understood (or shown to be understood!) by only intelectuals this genre of films r understood by very few.
this style of films

this style of films work on one basic concept of INTERPRETATION. there can be 'n' number of interpretations of his films bcause every individual will hav his own perspective on the film. i may interpret something dark but u may interpret it as a philosphical film. these type of film, uses a lot of metaphor in terms of narration of its idea.
so may be if not today, slowly we will hav a handful of audience, i mean intelectual audience who can crack the stories & themes of a film. Anurag will be remembered as the pioneer in this genre of arrogant filmmaking!

John Abraham:
by on Oct 29, 2007 05:01 PM

I went to see John Abraham because he always exuded the confidence of an international star.
He has the looks and personality of a global star. But Sorry to say John has acted in a very bad film. The film has no head and tale. The film lacks a structure with a dramatic equilibrium. It's written everywhere smaoking is bad.... what is there in this film..Nonsense.
John you trust a director but please check his credentials. Everybody can talk....dont get tricked into. Never work with such directors.
These second hand thieves who steal subjects from any where are the waste of time.
Bad direction Bad movie. Shame on such producers/directors who waste money. John Take it as a lesson. In your profession; U can not oblige friends by signing a film like this.
One more flop and there you go dear Johny.
Black list such directors and Producers.

The movie was great, the allegory superb, the camerawork and ideas mindboggling. You just didn't get it, it seems. Try watching it a few more times. For others, don't take this review to heart, go ahead and watch the movie. Its a masterpiece. -----india unwire . com

It's an aboslutely rubbish movie - completely absurd and crazy to say the least ! Avoid at all costs, esp. in a cinema hall lest you're left to regret like me !!

Sheer waste of time, effort, and money to watch this one in a cinema hall. Granted that the movie is "indeed very different" from the usual Bollywood formula movies, that still does not entitle its producers, directors, scriptwriters, and finally the actors to have fun and "indulge themselves" at the audience's expense. Sorry, but the simple fact-of-the matter is that just being different is not enough for a movie to become good or even watchable. "No Smoking" will remain a classic example of this trusim !
