No Smoking is superb and disturbing
by on Oct 30, 2007 10:32 AM

"No Smoking" is stunning. The battle for control of a man's soul always makes for disturbing viewing - this is a dark film, with a brooding and often chilling quality about it. Do we ultimately have to give up our inviduality (in K's case reflected through his stubborn and defiant act of chain smoking) and conform to society's dictates in order to be peaceful & content? Do we have to kill a part of ourselves in order to do so? These are some of the question asked in the film. Anurag Kashyap is a brilliant director. I thought John was fabulous in the film - a sensitive performance.

An abstract - Excellent attempt
by on Oct 30, 2007 10:13 AM

Its a masterpiece, an abstract.
Any other movie in india is shit. Black is so pretentious, this movie is good in part but borrows heavily from french cinema.
Hindi ciema is yet to find its identity with itself. This movie takes the first step to give some meaning to hindi cinema.
The only draw back is strong european cinema influence. An indian abstract is very much possible in present day context, the audience has matured. The reviewers are still held back, good winning against evil bla bla... time n again.
Indian cinema needs to find its direction, with such a talent in india (including anurag) we should be able to give it a shape with purpose and meaning.
About the movie, a few places anurag could have been bold. In one of the song, the lady could have gone topless, reflect the originality of expression.
In another case where the sole goes for a wash, in shorts and under wears, the men could have gone naked, otherwise the frame is an art piece.
There should be freedom of expression in arts, if the scene demanded, it should have been reflected. -----------unwire bollywood . com

A completely useless review

If you did not have the intelligence to understand the movie, why are you even writing a review on it? Either talk to someone who thinks he understands some of the underlying themes or shut up about it. No one wants to hear what a clueless critic thinks.

amazing...!!

The problem with our audience is that they want everything spoon fed, exaggerated and expected. The world always hates people who go beyond that...calling it madness. 'No smoking' is madness without limits, an amazing experience for a one who does not look for the director to take them through a 'song-dance-melodrama' sequence. NS is people as ideas, systems and forces...the first and the most amazing art-form originating in India. Pity...that most people went to watch the movie, just to be entertained. Don't they have soap operas on TV every night?

I think everyone will have their different takes on the movie. I saw many contrasting themes within the movie, and was personally impressed by Kashyap using situations from other classic movies like Schindler's list and giving it his own spin. The main theme of the movie, as I saw it, was the battle between fascism and freedom; in this case, Abraham's freedom to smoke. I think Kashyap used a conflict-ridden device for a mouthpiece, because smoking is not just a personal choice that doesn't affect anyone else. It has implications for the rest of the world as well, like in the movie, when Paresh Rawal's character says that Abraham had a 30% stake in his brother's asthmatic condition. But, I think this contradiction is what makes the movie not just a simple argument for one or the other. But it does raise a very important question about whether it is valid for society to require/demand so much conformity from any individual.
