pathetic review
by harish pi on Nov 08, 2007 05:09 PM  | Hide replies

this movie may be good or bad but this is not at all a good review. hegde doesnt have any idea about any genre of cinema other than some usual bolly formula flicks. such movies has to be made at least for the thinking public. rediff please consider reviewing this movie again with some other REAL reviewer, who has seen some world cinema & read some good surreal literature- at least Kafka

u mistook me vimlesh
movie may be bad, i agree
what im saying is that if it is bad it cannot be of reasons that are told in the review. reviewer cannot say that a movie is crap just because front buncher in tn cant follow that. he is paid to assess the movie technically. he has to point out wat eactly is the fault.

No Smoking is Not About Smoking..
by Chirag Viashnav on Nov 06, 2007 10:13 AM  | Hide replies

The movie is excellent..Actually this movie has nothing to do with Smoking. Ya, its about re-programming, re-programing of human being to make it a part of "mechanical system".

Movie is all about how a human lost his freedom, wishes, desires and get converted to a body who does what others are doing..

And being a part of a system he does same with others what people do with him!! Some unknown fear.. which makes you to do what others want you to do.(remember the black box where the put K and then do not show what happens there!) There are lot of good sequences in the move which you need to feel..

I can keep writing for whole day about movie but I have other work to do. So.. if you still have difficulty in getting it, go and watch it again. But.. you need have soul.. you should be able to think.. If you have already gone through baba's treatment, this movie is not for you..

For the people who have seen this movie and hate it like anything, go for 'jab we met', 'laga chunri me daag', 'om santi om'.. and be hapy.

Chuup! Seriusly u self-proclaimed geniuses making me hate this even more..

Surely u have read the Anuraag's Blog n then saw the movie.. Dont lie(if u have some dignity n soul as u already mentioned)

I saw it on First Day.. n believe me the reaction one has is exactly "What was director smoking?"

U may have brilliant idea and heart in right place.. but if u cant make the audience glued n engaged for 2 n 1.2 hours.. everything falls apart!

Explanation to all of you who don't get it

Ok before all of you start to call me "SO CALLED SELFPROCLAIMED SUPER GENIUS"
First of all I am not and what u'll read below is just an interpretation of what i was able to understand after watching this really different and daring movie, So if you please read on:
cheers for anurag kashyap for starting being bold enough to make such a daring and demanding movie. It demands a very refined intellect and certain amount of originality in the viewer to appreciate or even understand this movie. If you think you are a movie aficionado go and watch this movie and don't gripe about its being archaic. Now for those who didn't understand the movie....it develops on two simultaneous planes one the real or physical plane and another a spiritual or subconscious plane(reason for many dream like and seemingly illogical sequences).Paresh Rawal is not actually a charlatan .He is a mesmerizer or some kind of a psyche-reprogramming expert to whom the hero goes to quit smoking. The ensuing chaos is all about the psychologist trying to make him feel guilty about smoking by making his subconscious believe that his beloved ones are dying one by one because of his smoking. The cryptic settings akin to Nazi concentration camps is because his wife was watching a concentration camp movie that morning when it started. All that seems to be illogical is happening in the dreamworld. The song in which he seems to forget that his secretary and his wife are one and the same woman are straight from a dream. The p

The police officer smoking a cigar is a dream sequence because he is coming straight from a cigar launch function(the Fidel castrated cigar). The director has given many subtle hints as to which one is a real life scene and which one is a dream scene. You just have to watch out for the really straight from the dream things in the movie. And the last sequence (gas chamber) is again borne out of the concentration camp association in his mind of the whole thing.Gassing of soul means the total reprogramming of his subconscious so that he not only does not smoke now but has also lost his previous self assurance and his confidence

vimalesh singh, you need to have some material inside your head to understsnd the movie.

Watch it a few more times...your opinion may change.

I liked the movie, though I am not sure if it's an original theme.

A New Classic
by Jeff Eletto on Nov 02, 2007 10:47 AM  | Hide replies

Mr. Hegde, being a critic you should be familiar with all types of cinema. NO SMOKING is a brilliant and imaginative dream full of metaphysical ideas and it forces the moviegoer to really think. It's not for everyone and I was surprised at how much I loved it. It kept me riveted and I couldn't relax my mind until it was over and even then I was still thinking about it. It's not the normal Indian movie and I love Bollywood films too. It's not a normal movie in any country, but I'm sure when it travels outside of India it will find a wider audience. Even if at times it's way out there, it still is visually interesting. It reminded me of a Korean or Japanese film which veers way out of control sometimes, but then it all comes together at the end. That's just my opinion...

i totally agree with u jeff...the movie is a new classic and it'll best be enjoyed by viewers who "think out of the box" so to say. as for me i m big jap/korean/oriental movies buff...if people couldnt understand this movie dont ever bother with foriegn movies such as GOZU(by takashi mike),AUDITION (again Takashi)..ichi the killer (Takashi) and the like...i wanna conclude by saying that the director anurag kashyap has tried to "do" a takashi mike or a tarantino in India and failed bcoz the audience couldnt grasp his film's msg...hats off to anurag for being different than the normal candy-floss types!!!
