Critics are Essential
by anita r on Oct 03, 2007 08:41 PM

If Hindi films wish to be referred to as a medium of art then the role of film critics is indispensable.
The fact of the matter is that most films made today are below average and hardly warrant the time and energy spent on them. In fact I believe Indian critics need to be more scathing. But for that they need to be fantastic writers with a rich sense of irony and intellect.
Here's an excert from a article by the British critic A.A.Gill. People this is what actual criticism should be like -
" The play was the thing %u2013 a desperate, unbelievable, dramatically inert bit of third-degree embarrassment; secondhand agitprop cliché that would have shamed a drama-GCSE improv class. Not a single word or emotion or reaction was honest or believable or real. Again, I%u2019m speechless with admiration for the Tristram who has been paid money, fed lunch and given a chair that goes up and down and has such insouciant confidence in the idiocy of his audience that he allowed this to be broadcast. And not just cast, but cast with good actors who had agents who suffered the same effortless belief and said: "Do it. Who cares? It%u2019s cash." Finally, and most awe-inspiringly, that someone sat down at a keyboard, tapped away and made The Dinner Party %u2013 a crippling, dribbling, mewling homunculus of plagiarism. And, having done it, they didn't turn white and book themselves into an ashram. They said: "This is cool. I'll show it to the grown-ups", and pressed Send. The next time this writer sees his or he

Hmmmm...Yes, But!

Hiya Bolly,
I totally agree with when u say that some of these bollywood directors live in ego bubbles!
I mean who the hell do they think they are, especially producing trash movie after trash movie-especially in 2007!
However, some Indian film critics, really don\\\'t know how to critique a movie and are indeed opinionated bozos! Such critics need to learn the art of critical/appraisal-balancing out the bad parts as well as the good and vice versa.
Producing an opinionated article, isn\\\'t a review, its a blog!

Cheers,

Sudakshina Mukherjee.

Review of the reviewer
by on Oct 03, 2007 08:22 PM

I will quote from the article

"and Rediff's Raja Sen %uFFFD the only critic I know who has an 'I hate Raja Sen' community on Orkut."

What a statement, of course Raja Sen would be the only critic who has an "I Hate Raja Sen" community the others would be called by named after the other reviewers. Ahem

"I referred to Memento and its 'inspired' Tamil version providing the inspiration for Aamir Khan's next outing; there is also the film Pokkiri, the Telugu megahit directed by Puri Jagannath and starring Mahesh Babu [Images], which Vijay remade in Tamil with Asin (Aamir Khan's latest heroine) in Tamil. Prabhu Deva [Images], who helmed the Tamil version, is currently busy directing the Hindi remake of the Tamil remake of the Telugu remake, with Salman Khan [Images] in the lead, in locations around Mumbai."

Forget the grammar, what telugu remake, when did you say that Pokkiri was a remake?

Uhh seems like film reviewers arent the only lazy ones

Wrong

A good film critic should tell his readers if they are likely to enjoy the film.

Right?

We buy your publication or spend time on your website hoping it will help us. If you tell me something is a good movie, I want to go believing that you are right, that it will indeed entertain me, that it is value for my money and time.

I don't care for your opinion if it isn't helping me spend my money and time wisely.

It's far simpler to tell others whether you liked a movie, than to predict how it will do at the box office (i. e. how much the aam junta will like it). If you have that special skill, you deserve to advise me and get paid for it.

What?!?!
by Harinder Toor on Oct 03, 2007 08:00 PM

Don't write for the sake of writing! This is totally unacceptable. I pity rediff for allowing some third grade "critic pleader" to write such an article which makes me (Needless to say all my fellow readers) yawn from the word go. USELESS!

What were you saying again? Dude.. your whole article seemed pointless. As you mentioned somewhere in your 2458 words article that you read a lot of books, I guess you should stick to reading, and not writing. And by calling an actor like Aamir Khan, a Robert de Niro wannabe... all I can say is... phew... dude... you suck !!! (btw...its a matter of personal taste)

This writer probably deserves to be called a retard simply for his audacity/idiocy in referring to a serious about his craft, sincere actor like Aamir Khan as a Robert De Niro wannabe.Wannabe Barry Norman maybe.

I meant that this 'Bolly Woods' is a wannabe writer trying to ape renowned film critics like Norman or possibly any writer who graces the pages of say, Sight and Sound, the British film monthly.Bolly Bhaiye/behen, you are with Rediff, part of TOI circle, a group that loves some Bollywallas and sniggers at others.

Ho Ho Ho
by Vinay Joshi on Oct 03, 2007 06:38 PM

Ho ho ho! This article makes a valiant attempt at protecting critics. What are they exactly? A boon to movie goers who want to be forewarned about a movie? But are they to ALL movie goers? As the writer rightly pointed out, each one is entitled to his own opinion.... about a movie! Therefore one may like a movie, which others may dont like and that too in varying degrees.

Each person is a product of his/her own biases and so is a critic. Airing a view openly about a movie, which affects the film's collection is debatable. After all, after a movie is made, and it flops, nothing can be salvaged. In a brick and mortar company, you can still recover some assets like land, plant & machinery, etc. In case of a movie, all the money is lost. Spare a thot for the producers.

Critics should be allowed to air their views only after atleast one week of the movie's release. That way the movie (if its a bad one)can make atleast some money from the first week through smart advertising.

What does the writer mean that critics view movies every friday day in and day out, blah blah...Come out of it. Its just three hours in one whole week. It doesnt get better than this.

As I said, critics should not be allowed to write about a movie for atleast one week, after the movie is released! Period
