Kamal is the best actor in Indian Cinema. But, I think he's n't got the recognition so far. One should n't compare Kamal with others as he is the only actor in India who is trying to make our movies reach world wide. And also he is an all-rounder.
I do think Kamal is a very good actor. I dont think there is anyone else in the world of films who can match the variety of roles he has donned over the years. But yet, here is my qualm. Almost every character Kamal has played has imitated greater performance from hollywood actors. Here are my Examples. 1.His role in Nayakan was absolutely astonishing but then had Marlon Brando's role in Godfather to refer to and he did follow that style of acting through out that movie. 2. People familiar with the tamil movie Guna. Go watch dustin hoffman's rain man. You will see the resemblance in Kamals enactment of a mentally deranged person. 3. His comic roles in Chachi 420 and others might have been original but then the role itself was based on Tutsie and Mrs.Doubtfire. Comic roles are more dependent on script than on acting. Kamal's best performance has been in Kuruthy Punal, remake of Drohkaal. I still think he is a great actor and has brought Hollywood performances to the Indian public. But to compare him with the likes of Brando, Hoffman, Hanks, Pacino etc. is wrong.
Indian cinema has produced a few other actors who may not have climbed up the ladder like Kamal but they are equally good. Nazerudin Shah, Ompuri, Anupam kher etc.

thats shows u have not seen even 10% of Kamal's classics!! u say "Almost every character Kamal has played has imitated greater performance from hollywood actors." this is blasphemous!! i agree he has done some roles which are inspired by hollywood films. and there is nothing wrong in that, cos Hollywood copies many of the movies and characters from Japanese, French and Korean films. Here, im listing some brilliant original characters of Kamal Haasan for those people like you who are not aware of his plethora of talents:
1. Salangai Oli - As a Bharathanatyam Dancer. 2. Sigappu Rojakkal - as a young kid who, due to unfortunate circumstances becomes a cold blooded psychopath.(this was remade in hindi by Rajesh Khanna as 'Red Roses' but the hindi version bombed) 3. Mahanadhi - A villager comes to the city, gets cheated by a friend and his family suffers. 4. Sippikkul Muthu - as a mentally retarded villager. 5. Punnagai Mannan - as a Disco Dancer and Charlie Chaplin's fan. 6. Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu - Assistant Comissioner of Police. 7. Apoorva Sagotharargal - As Appu, the dwarf 8. Avargal - Janardhan, the ventriloquist.
Kamal is a living legend and is the BEST actor in all of India. His performance in Nayagan is the finest performance by any actor in all of Indian Cinema.
HES ONLY D ACTOR FRM D SOUTH TO MAKE A MARIK IN BOLLYWOOD FAR BETTER THEN RAJNIKANT. WHEN HE CAME TO BOLLYWOOD HE DIDNT KNEW A WORD IN HINDI BUT D WAY HE SPOKE HE WAS SO FLUENT. HES D BEST ACTOR IN INDIA BUT A VERY EGOISTIC N CHALU INSAAN USNE SAB HEROINES PE CHANCE MARA HAI
He is really a great actor what we can say about him . but i acn say his performance in mairatnam " nayakan " was best performace i have witnessed . I love to see him again with MANI.
al might be a great actor but for kamal's variance, tom hanks probably might be closer. but al is jus a Stereotype actor. kamal is a class apart. atleast from india no one one even in their dreams can come anywhere closer to him as on date. anywayz wishing him a very happy b'day.

Totally agree with you dude. Kamal sure is very much in the same mould as Tom Hanks in terms of sheer variety. Al Pacino, despite being a great actor, does tend to act in similar roles. The versatality of Kamal is unmatched among the bigger names in India. However among the less celebrated names Nasseerudin Shah, Om Puri and others are brilliant too.
The author has conveniently overlooked his superlative performance in SAAGAR - especially when he splashes water on his face to camouflage his tears when he hears that DIMPLE loves RISHI. Amazing performance. The writer has also conveniently set aside APPU-RAJA, where he plays a dwarf.
