Atleast its true for bollywood films. Bollywood films has a much more wider audience than the south indian films. Not only the indians but Pakistanis, Bangladesis also watch them. Bollywood reached to this stature because of a major boost from the NRI folks. South do also have its own share of NRI viewers but lot less than Bollywood film watchers. The author has missed a fine point of reverse flux. Agreed that actors like Aishwarya, Sushmita etc have found takers in Bollywood but so has actors like Khushbu, Jyotika, Simran, Nagma in South industry. These actors tried their bit in Bollywood movies and turned south later. So this migration of sorts always do happen all the time and I have never heard Simran ranting about her Bollywood career in south. From time immemorial, south and bollywood film industry have been viewed differently and if an actor of one industry tries his luck in another, he or she tries to keep his or her past career in shadows. Don't know the reason but thats what they prefer unlike actors like Nandita Das, Tabu who want to genuinely act in different languages of cinema for the love of it and they don't hide this fact. Deepika Padukone is quiet naive and is obviously quiet in awe of fools like Shahrukh khan. Other day, I saw an interview of another upcoming gal called Asin, and she wasn't hiding the fact that she had acted in Tamil movies. Point is that the author is generalizing taking Deepika's case.
I commend you for acknowledging this matter and writing about it. You aren't the only one that's bothered by this familiar trend. I am also greatly irritated by seeing artistes establish a name in the South only to venture out to Bollywood and never look back. This is popular with not only actors/actresses, but even directors, music directors, camera men, etc. For instance, arguably the most popular and established film director, writer and producer in India, Mr.Mani Ratnam, has left his Tamil roots to work in the Hindi industry permanently. His colleague, A.R Rahman, seems to have followed Mani sir's route and it is a matter of time before Rahman completely leaves the Tamil industry to fulfill his Bollywood commitments. Although Rahman does compose for Tamil movies, it seems he delivers more albums, and I should mention 'hits', in Hindi rather than the language that nurtured him and took him in its wings. There is so much talent in the South...I mean, the most prominent technicians, producers, and directors are from the South. So many of our talents have unfairly left the Tamil and Telugu industry to the more 'well-known' Bollywood industry for the money and commercial attraction. However, that is not what frustrates me...what frustrates me are the ignorant artistes who forget about where they started and never mention their roots in their breath. It is very shameful on their part.

Guys, Be Indian...Bollywood has never been serious cinema, but yet it represent entire india, it has to represent someone sitting in far North east and also a guy in mahabalipuram or a guy in Patna or Delhi or Mumbai...to satisfy so many audience and still have entertainment value is a herculian task...Tamil or Malayalam cinema does not have that constraint and have more freedom to express within their homogeneous audience...but that does not bring it down...I as an indian is equally proud of Mr Kamal Hasan and Amitabh Bachchan or a Shahrukh or Rajni sir..but dear southie brother's do not say that all tamil cinema is great..I have seen lot of masala junk with big commerecial hits behind their back incluing some of the biggest name from south...so pls love india and anything that is indian..(Jai Bihar)....

For you Information.....south movies(south means Tamil and Malayalam....we Tamils don't consider Karnataka & Andhra in south, for us it is north only).....so South movies (Tamil movies) are good ones, we can see them with family..only some extra voilence and finghting is their.....but other North movies are stylish only(telegu, kanada and bolly wood).......but anyway...east or west India is the best....north or south India is the best.
not that it would make an earth shattering difference, but sushmita's debut south RATCHAGAN was not based on FUGITIVE.---another nagarjuna starrer CRIMINAL was based on FUGITIVE, , directed by MAHESH BHATT and starred MANISHA KOIRALA...it had the hit song ' TU HI RE....' a rage in 1994-95...so get yr facts rigt!
