I know some people want to keep on abusing others and want to get away with it and if somehow someone complains then they try to stop him from doing so or shout him down similar to Hitler's SS. It is just one example of the nazification/talibanization/balkanization this country is heading towards. People here are targeting communities believing what great service they do to their kins not realizing that targeting any community in itself is a great disservice to the country and to their community itself.I don't want my country to have several partitions on communal,casteist and linguistic-regional lines, but with all this going on, I can only look in dismay as to what my country is slowly turning into. A great disservice to the country is being done by this balkanization process and seems loyalties from India have now narrowed down to local affiliations,there seems to be no patriotism left!!!! It just seems to be a Feudal structure waiting to erupt similar to what happened in 47!! OLD VERSION... The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant's a fool and laughs & dances & plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter so he dies out in the cold.

The above facts are misleading. Periyar was preferring a British rule as he felt that the Brahmins would oppress the backward classes after independence. This is evident from Rajaji's proposal of "Kula Thozhil Thittam" which is a scheme to make children attending schools to learn their parent's occupation. Also, it is not lust which made him marry Maniammai but in order to pass on his vast hereditary wealth to a girl, he had to do so as the law did not allow him to pass it by any other means. C.N.Annadurai just used this as an excuse to come out to form his political party. I agree with the point that the Vanniyars and Thevars(although I am a vanniyar by birth) are continuing their hegemony over the dalits. The Vanniyars and Thevars still believe that they were born from Brahma's chest. This clearly shows their outlook is still backward. Dr.Ramadoss while addressing a gathering of Vanniyars asked them not to exploit the Dalits and within 5 minutes the entire crowd disappeared as they did not like it. The Vanniyars and Devars are socially powerful but educationally backward.So, they are still backward. The spread of education with moral values will help over the long run. The Dalits should not go back to the Vanniyars or Devars for employment. It is a really a sad story that Dalits who form 15% of India's population are not able to fill the seats allocated to them in educational institutions. Philantropists should come forward to build schools and colleges in Dalit areas.They should be made an egalitarian society which will avoid them from developing a hostile attitude towards the other castes which have oppressed them.

Answer - This is the most rediculous argument one can give. Even muslims come up with such arguments to defend their Md's marriage with a 9 yr old child and consummiting the marriage with her - such things are AND were considered pedophilic!
He could have very well 'adopted her' as his 'daughter' to pass on his wealth. There is NO LAW that can prevent that and there is NO LAW that gives additional monetary previledges to a wife compared to a daughter.

he could have set up an institution for welfare of women.that way he would be passing his property to women.that would have been much more ethical and sensible and would have benefited a lot of women.i don't think that the law at that time prevented it.he simply wanted to satisfy his lust for women.there's no other reason for that atrocious action of his.

I could not understand one thing. If vanniyars have their hegemony over dalits, is reservation the way to teach them to respect dalits? If they are sociall powerful (means they are rich too but without education as per your say), giving them reservation will create more problems as they could compete with Dalits and marginalise them in the long run. Reservation is not meant for "educating" a socially powerful (rich) but backward group but to uplift poor, downtrodden and CURRENTLY oppressed people which are undoubtedly dalits, SC, STs. Dalits, SC, STs (most of them) are not socially powerful.
Please understand that it was only British who gave brahmins high administrative posts during their rule. How can periyar favoured a british rule here? I think it is the usual tactic of British's divide and rule.

Upgrade your thought Sammy!! Now, => "If someone does not like the person, let them not watch it" This is like saying, "if someone does not like the Britishers then do not talk to them"! Obviously that is not going to drive the Brits away and get our independence, will it? We are talking about a personality and idelogy whose realm of influence is not with the 4 walls of his house. => "We always respected each others culture and religion and valued our friendship." Obviously I agree with you here ... except that EVR's followers dont seem to think this way BY the very DEFINITION of this man's teachings. While such hate preachings are itself detrimental to India, publicizing this man as a 'hero' or 'ideal model' only makes things worse for the country.
periyar was against idol worship which is common among the hindus. But today his followers while chastising the upper caste for idol worship, also do the same thing. All the Dravidian parties without any exception practice idol worhsip. It may be the idol of periyar or MGR or karunanidhi/Thevar or other leader. They bathe these idols on their birdhtday and deathday with milk and water, garland them and celeberate it with pomp and show. However they shamelessly blame the uppercaste for idol worship. At least the uppercast worship the idols inside a temple or in a closed place, but these people shamelessely do all these things in the open. Periyar was not a tamilian, he was a kannadiga but established himself as a leader. These shameless tamilians made him a leader.
