One request, everybody I am trying to have a decent and meaningful conversation about Music here if you don't have a relevant message to what I have posted please post your own thread. - Thank you.
I am a huge fan of rahman, I really think that he is the best of his generation. His music truely is spiritual.
Reading about layers in his music from Chitra, I feel sometimes that has become a problem. Rahman tends to over mix on the computer sometimes. Till now he has managed to strike a good balance
However,Recently I heard Mauli Dave singing Maiyya Maiyya in Zee Tvs Saregamapa and found that what she sang sounded much better than the original Maiyya Maiyaa from the moive Guru. Not only she sang well but music was changed a bit too.
In case of the original Maiyaa Maiyaa, Rahman used 2-3 singers and there was too much of mixed music. While in case of Mauli Dave's song her voice emerged beautifully due to less complications.
Great music need not be complex (Eine Kline Nacht Music of Mozart!) but if you want to make it complex then make it very clear. Too much computer mixing sometimes also kills the continuity of a song and makes it chaotic.
Rahman's Roja, Taal, Lagaan, Dilse, Zubedaa, were so clear and well composed
Now his work pressure shows in his work probably or on a lighter note he is over 40 and should really work in the day time or his age will show in his work. :)

I totally disagree with u. He uses computer mixing according to the rhythm of the song. You hear Water & Earth songs where very less electronic instruments have been used. In case of Mayya Mayya it was a more of a item number which needed heavy music layers.

I agree most of the time it has worked from Roja to Urvashi to Mahndi hai rachnewali (beautiful) Even Maiyaa Maiyaa I liked but when I heard it on Saragamapa and compared it with the original I felt that the problem in that song was over mixing. With a limited instuments and lesser wild drumming the voice became prominent and Mauli sounded extremely good.

watch and compare and probably still you would not agree but for a moment shut your mind to the fact that the music came from Rahman. And you will see the difference. Composition is still Rahman's the issues is how much mixing is good and at what point it starts turning around.

Sadhana Sargam's talent is unquestionable lot of south Indians are jealous of her because she robbed of Chitra's and Sujatha's dominance there (I'm a Tamilian myself). That's one of the reasons some people can't appreciate her true talent, Rahman himself said recently in US that most of the singers can fulfill his expectations when he have them sing for him, but Only Sadhana Sargam can surpass his expectation and surprise him. (Not even Lata M he didn't say that but that's what he meant otherwise he would have said sadhana and Lata surprise him) Don't you think? If you like ARR's music sadhana sargam is the singer you should enjoy listening to. Obviously you dont have ears for music.
