The adaption of the longest book
by Dushyant Kanungo on Jul 16, 2007 10:17 AM

The Book 5 is the longest book in the HP series.. so it was a new experiance to see it as the shortest movie of the series.

The best part was it made us feel the human factor behind harry. previous films lacked it.

'remember my last Petunia..' phrase was not used so it ends a lot of speculations about the Dursleys in book 7. Plus the scene where harry is possesed by the Dark Lord clearly says Harry is the final horcrux... thus supporting the fan fic which is written here...

The best movie in the series... but the books are the best.. always!

They can be compared
by Ram Kumar on Jul 15, 2007 05:19 PM  | Hide replies

They can actually be compared - books and movies. There are several examples for this. Take for example The Godfather or Contact. Both definitely excellent movies. When you say you can't convey emotions, you forget the fact that a visual image can better (as the author intended) portray things with the help of the actors, the sets etc.
If you dont want comparisons, then why do you use all the hype? It is because of the books that, so many people flock to see the movies. So when you make an adaptation, you cant really run and hide behind a veil, saying books cannot be compared. Eragorn a crappy book made into a crappy movie. LoTR - great fantasy, great movies.
Harry Potter - sad series (forgive me fanboys). I could not care less, but no good books can be made into great movies and crappy movies too. An adaptation can and should be compared to the book.

well whoever u r u cannot be a good reader. actually u hardly read at all. u pointed out the godfather. it is one of the rare occasions when a good book was adapted well. the HP series isnt a sucess because of magic-it is the emotional content that makes it special.it is a boy's story-not story of the magic he performs. i suggest u read the books first then write such crap views. rather keep them to urself.

I am not a good reader? Do you even know what you are talking about? Do you even know anything about the fantasy genre apart from these books? I did not talk about Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series or GRR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire Series? Now they are good fantasy novels. The Wheel of Time is the best fantasy series I have read so far. Its a series of 12 books of which 11 books (and 1 prequel) have been written so far. Now that is not made into movies. Simply because its way too complex to be adapted.
Emotional Content? Its immature and childish. There is no real depth to the characters. Starting from the villain to our wonderful Mr. Potter. And dear Sir, these books have become popular because of the fantasy element in them. Otherwise what is to distinguish this really from the scores of Enid Blyton's books (St. Clares series for example)? The only thing I can appreciate about Harry Potter is that it brought Fantasy to the mainstream readers/ moviegoers.
Emotional content?? Blah! It plays on the popular mother son sentimentality and other such crap which I get enough from the Karan Johar Movies.
Yes, I mentioned Godfather because it was adapted well. That is why, every popular book is not adapted into a movie. I suggest you read more and then talk about reading. Dont be such a philistine that you cant appreciate other viewpoints.

I don't agree at all with this. A movie is never good enough because each person's imagination is different. So a visual representation will never satisfy us all. As for what you say about "Eragon", I couldn't disagree more with you. I really thought "Eragon" the book was brilliant. Yes.. very similar to LoTR. But it still is a very original work. The movie was horrible. I suspect that was because the film makers were scared of the legal implications of making a film so similar to LoTR in the visuals. Hence, they decided to make a movie which is a cross between "Dragonheart" and "Star Wars" with neither the slick dialogue of Sean Connery, nor the breathtaking visual effects and scope of "Star Wars".

u seriously cant compare the movies with the books... wel yeah accepted the movies have been made based on the books but u cant expect a 600 odd page book to be made exactly into a movie... and obviously any day the book will be better than the movie cuz it talks about the feelings and emotions whr as a movie it has to be shown and it always doesnt come out wel... n thr wasnt too much hype... the hype was thr in the right quantities... watch d muvi as a muvi... read the book as a book... dont compare them... n d director myt hav changed the story line here and thr a little... of course y cant he??? as long as it is gud n goin along wid the flow??? d muvi is his baby at the end of the day n he can do anythng he wants... i think the movie was too good... it was amazin n seriously the best potter movie til date... the books are always first preferred but the movies too are good in their own way... they arent tht bad either... they aint bad at al... they rock...

too much hype killed the joy of the movie
by Coomi Selod on Jul 15, 2007 02:44 PM  | Hide replies

somehow I left the theatre feeling a loss. The hype was greater than the movie. the editing was very jerky... some moments were incomplete and disjointed... at least this is what i felt. Maybe the film was censored or something

just cant compare !
by shruti vaidya on Jul 14, 2007 10:34 PM  | Hide replies

you cant compare the two forms of entertaintment at all ........I mean with the book you can go deep into the details and the movie just had about two hours to tell the story .the good points of the movie were the emotional bond between sirius and harry on screen and the climax in the ministry .What I didnt like was that they couldn't capture the rage that harry goes through in his adolescence .........also the grand exit of the weasley brothers (my favourite characters throughout )should have been more detailed .But I must agree that this by far the darkest and most interesting of all the movies ..........so whether a pottermaniac or not ................go watch the movie .........you will not regret your decision ......and try not to compare

I totally agree with you said. I mean whatever the movies do manage to bring the book alive. The first step is when they do the casting so perfect.I watched the movie today and was absolutley thrilled.Forget about whether they changed the plot or not, I mean they did manage to capture the best moments of the book like the firweorks by Fred and george and all those important dialogues from the book.who ever can even think of going that close.I think these series were the best ones in a book to movie adaptation. the problem is americans cant sit through a long movie, but i think that is where we indians dont mind.I done mind spiderman, pirates or harry potter to be very long if they can give an interval of 10 mins and start it again that did be wonderful.

The movie doesn't justify the book
by on Jul 14, 2007 08:48 PM  | Hide replies

I have been a die hard Harry Potter fan but this time after watching the movie there wasn't the satisfaction that the rest of the movies had left us with.
To begin with the book's impression about the return of the dark lord was a lot more intense , all through the movie there a one to many instances where the movie deviates from the story in the book.
It might have been a book where we felt that we have also grown with Potter but the emotions were truly missing.

Of course the book is way better than the movie. Having said that I will admit that this movie was by far the best of the lot. Dark and definitely not kiddie stuff, the book really brought to life the fear of You Know Who being back. The movie was great fun to watch, the minor plot changes notwithstanding.
Imelda Staunton as Dolores Jane Umbridge was truly delightful and I cannot stop raving about Loony er Luna Lovegood. The other characters reprised their roles with the usual grace and I thought there was more Hermione than Ron. It helped that she looked really good throughout the movie.
The special effects and the background score were fantastic.
My favourite parts of the movie were the last 30 minutes (Ministry scenes) and the DA meetings, in that order. The pace of the movie was maintained throughout, with not a single scene being excessive or wasteful. Just one bone to pick though - I felt they didn't do the Weasley twins leaving Hogwarts scene enough justice. JKR's most likable creations were quite underutilized in the movie.
All in all a really good movie to watch, and Pottermaniac that I am, I'll definitely watch it again.
One tip though - it would be a good idea to read the book before you go to watch the movie.
Sukanya.

I would say that the book is 100% better than the film. I would like to mention that inspite of movie failed to capture the creativity of the book the performances of the actors & actress were commandable.....I am fortunate enough to stay in the same city where J.K.Rowling lives & would few of the lucky ones who get 2 read the book the every minute it realeases.........
