Idiots all over the globe

How can people be taken up by such tomfoolery. But then i guess, for people who can build temples for film stars and get them elected to parliament, the current drama is very believable.
What this Shetty character did is an amazing bit of acting. First she was the cry baby, when that didnt work, she did the only thing which would get noticed, racial allegation. Then when the Hosts offered her money and lots of it, she turned over her statement completely and said everybody was nice to her. Her whole family now plays a goody goody image forgiving the "foreign beti" for her racist remarks (which incidentally were not racist according to Shilpas latest statement). If you choose to live in the same bedroom with Foreigners for a month, that too in a competition involving 85Lakhs, do you expect teddy bear talk from the other contestants. The basic truth is Shilpa is one of the most cunning, tough skinned, ruthless bollywood actress to date and she played the cards very well. When javans die to protect our nation and the police men stay awake day and night to protect our neighbour hood, when social workers sacrifice personal life to protect our forests and our villagers, nobody cares a damn. The glory hogs who know how to play the emotional cards very well gets the fame and the money. But nobody can be blamed as much the media which blows everything out of propotion for their TRPs. It is no use saying Shame on You India, because people just dont change. So the least i can say is Shame on You Rediff.

Well said Narayan, entire episode is nothing more than a eye catching / TRP centric drama where quite successfully the entire crew (Shilpa etc) injected a national pride. Just for the sake of arousing the national interest, let Shilpa donate all her earnings to some charity publicly - one hope better sense prevails amongst us to differentiate nationalism from gimmicks like the one we saw.

Congrats Shilpa

You brought proud to entire country and deserve each and every Indian's congratulations. You have once more shown to the entire world the tolerance power of an average Indian and will to survive and win at last. Why we must blame others for racism. Are we really fair while we treat our own countrymen particularly dalits and tribals. Have we really come out of our narrow thinking and still discriminate? Do we really give equal opportunity to them. They are remembered only for votes and quoted for solitary examples. Shilpa episode must prove to be eye opener to all of us.

Don't feel proud of her victory

Though Shilpa has won %u201CBig Brother%u201D she has brought a %u201CBig Shame%u201D to India. Her victory is not a matter to be proud of. She has actually put the Indians in a bad light on the world stage. The two faces of Shilpa came to the fore. One, of a servile and helpless woman who endured abuse without any qualms and fightback. And two, of a manipulative and mercenary woman who does anything for money at the cost of her dignity. With such behaviour on the show what kind of message has she given to thousands of women who are being abused daily and for young women who wants to be successful. That women should continue enduring abuse meekly and young women should pursue success at the cost of their own and nations dignity. I am proud of those millions who took up the issue of racism and reacted strongly. And I am proud of that Gujarat businessman who incurred heavy loss by refusing to sell / market Jade Goodie's perfume "Shh..". But I would feel more proud in future if all these people react in the same way when a common man is racially abused. It was surprising and disgusting that in spite of all the support she got, Shilpa did nothing about the abuse. No complaint. No rebuke. Only hugging Goodie and forgiving her. How did Shilpa fight it out? By crying? By hugging the abuser? Retracting her statement? By doing nothing about the abuse? Not even complaining about it. Where's the fight back? This is the problem with Indian women. They don't fight back. Hence millions of abusive husbands continue to harass their wives everyday. We are not living in 20s, its 2007, and India is going places. I would have admired if Shilpa had given a fitting riposte to Goodie in a strong manner. Yes it was in our interest that she remained dignified and continued in the show but not as a weak & submissive woman but as a strong woman. Everyone is praising about her dignified behaviour. Is "crying" and enduring abuse a dignified behaviour? If at all, the meek submission by Shilpa has made Indians looked servile once again. The British did it to us before Independence and they are doing it even now. Suppose a woman is being raped or abused on the street. So should she remain dignified and not do anything to save herself? Shilpa has shamed the brave Indians. But then, when there are 3 crores involved who wouldn't sell her soul and dignity. There's no point in millions complaining when Shilpa herself did not complain against the abuse (not racial abuse, which she was not aware about). Come on, all this drama was rehearsed and preplanned one. Shilpa is a damn good actress. And she proved it on the show. There was nothing wrong with all this fake drama except that the government should not have been involved and there should have been no nationalistic sentiments or melodrama. Why should Shilpa have accepted the remarks against her country on foreign channels? She should have quit or reacted strongly. There was no other way. I detest anyone insulting the Indians anywhere. So there is no way I am justifying what the contestants have done to Shilpa. But I am only disappointed with her servile and selfish attitude. I don't have sympathies for weak and submissive persons no matter who they are. I can understand about the common man if he suffers abuse and continue with his well paid job. After all he has responsibilities and cannot afford to let go the much needed money. But if rich and powerful personalities like Shilpa Shetty succumb to abuse and do nothing then they deserve the hell not sympathies. Why weren't we equally angry on the Big Boss participants who harassed and abused Rakhi Samant just like we were all angry on Shilpa getting abused by a foreigner? Finally, Jade Goodie has done to Shilpa what Ash's PR could not do it even in five years. Jade has made Shilpa richer and a household name in UK and a famous personality in UK in just two days. So Shilpa has to thank Jade for that.

AMJAD K. MARUF
