Due Credit to Prof Higgins Nayyar
by on Jan 29, 2007 09:53 AM  | Hide replies

O.P. Nayyar will be best remembered as the man who played Prof Higgins to a budding Eliza in Asha Bhosle. The man was responsible for pulling Asha out of a rut and it is not an exaggeration to say that she never sang so beautifully and with such grace, elan and verve before OR after the O.P. Nayyar period. Her peak was attained during this period.
In your tribute, you forgot to mention that Shamshad Begum was O.P.'s favourite singer along with Geeta Dutt till Asha 'happened'. In one of his recent interviews he apologized for 'bypassing Shamshad in favour of Asha'.
Ironically, the man who said that Lata's voice did not suit his compositions had to watch his assistant G.S.Kohli churn out four mega hit numbers with Lata in the now-forgotten film Shikari - the songs being 'Baaje ghungroo cham cham', 'agar main poochon jawab doge'(with Rafi), 'chaman ke phool bhi tujhko'(with Rafi) and the wildly popular 'Tum ko piya dil diya (with Usha).

What will be Ashaji's tribute?

It would be interesting to see Asha Bhonsle's tribute. For some years she has been avoiding in giving credit to OPN in shaping her career. He was truly composer , who had Bairagya. Savera ka Suraj , thumhara liye hai

Are you really expecting any ? In industry like this, singers use composers as "ladders". Some are used like a handkerchief, washed and used again. Some like paper napkins, use and throw, totally disposable.

you have rightly said that the composers of the yesteryears have been used by these sisters as ladders. Who can forget that HUSNLAL-Bhagatram, SHANKAR-JAIKISHAN,and S.D. Burman had done for Lata Mangeshkar but now she only remembers her 'Madan Bhaiyya' and her brother 'Hridynath'and we all know what is the contribution of her brother in Indian film music. But she should know that we music lovers would not fell in her trap. Lata is only Lata because of S-J, C. Ramchandra, SD. Burman and Naushad and for Asha there is only one name and that is of great OP NAYYAR.

OP Saab deserves a better Obituary !
by Umesh Shah on Jan 29, 2007 07:01 AM  | Hide replies

Rediff, wake up guys ! Even after the errors were pointed out, you guys have not corrected the article.
Jhumka Gira Re was Madan Mohan's composition from the 1966 Sunil Dutta/Sadhna starrer Mera Saaya.
Andaz Apna Apna had music by Tushar Bhatia.

Hope you guys take a note of this. Don't do such lousy jobs ... !

O. P. Nayyar

Of course, he will always be remembered for his music. However, he was not the music director of Andaaz Apna Apna. It was Tushar Bhatia and yes, his music does seem influenced by Mr Nayyar's. O. P. Nayyar did however did provide music for another Salman Khan and Karishma Kapoor film called Nischaiye.

You'll be in our hearts as long as we love the music. your music is forever. besides a musician he is a very simple and down to earth personality.

His movies like kashmir ki kali, C.I.D, Aar Par etc have immortal and very original music. Thanks a lot for all that great music. God Bless his soul.

Homage to OP Nayyar Sahib
by RAVINDER BAGGA on Jan 29, 2007 05:42 AM

One of the very few all-time great Music Directors which India has produced or would ever produce. His songs would always be there in the hearts of music lovers and in Indian music history for centuries to come. Everybody says what Asha Bhonsle is today, is due to OP ji. But Asha ji, now that he is no more, you must acknowledge that - whatever your relations with OPji were. That would enhance your respect in the minds of all music-lovers. Pls. do that now.
