its not perfect
by Riaz Ahmed Shah on Jan 24, 2007 01:19 PM

even the Oscars are not perfect , there were several times when deserving films and actors werent given their due, but given much later for less deserving projects.
for eg. Denzel Washington gave stellar performances in Malcolm X and Hurricane , but was awarded for a lesser performance in Training Day..some suggested that academy voters were trying to justify all the times they didnt award him!
I believe the same might happen for the Departed, its a good film..not great or anything ,by far the original movie "Infernal Affairs" was much better. But poor Scorsese who has given us some of the greatest films was never recognised by the Academy..so it would seem it is time for his due...but even I being a fan of Scorsese feel that he shouldn't be given the award this way,as far as i'm concerned he won the Oscar long time ago with Taxi Driver (in an alternate Universe maybe!?!)
This time Clint Eastwood or Alejandro Iñárritu should get it for best director.
Best film should be Little Miss Sunshine
Best actor ...Whitaker for Last King Of Scotland
Best actress Helen Mirren for The Queen

How about n article on Can Water Do It?
by ankit gupta on Jan 24, 2007 11:00 AM

Its so sad that another film by an Indian director and cast gets nominated for the Oscars and we read an article about if The Departed can do it! How about writing a piece on this wonderful gem of a moive which has opned the eyes of a western nation to India as a land of culture and movies which engage. Rediff is increasingly writing about pointless silly articles about Aishwarya and her marriage but not those which wud generate interest in people!!

why shud Indians be ashamed?
by ajay singh on Jan 24, 2007 06:19 AM  | Hide replies

Why should Indians be ashamed of? It is really sad to see the taste of international film audiences. They can only accept only one theme from an Indian film maker (although it is a canadian entry but the story is totally Indian). And the theme is showing all the ills in society like poverty, age old customs etc. Water is really a great film but people still think that Indians live in a world where there is no development. Indians can make some greate movies and last year we had atleast 3 - RDB, Munnabhai and Omkara. Before Lagaan there were only 2 Indian films nominated to OScars and they were Pather Panchali and Saleem Langde pe Mat ro. Both of them were "art" movies. There are a lot many things that are great about India (and lot many that aren't but in RDB there was a dialogue "Koi bhi desh perfect nahin hota, use perfect banana padta hai"). In terms of message RDB and Munnabhai had something to say and the director showed it beautifully and the message was relevant to the current situation. Yes the people who protested against WATER shud really be ashamed but India should still be proud of sending a movie like RDB to Oscars. India is not the country of snake charmers and beggers. There are still many good things about that country

To correct u Mr Ajay Singh, Pather Panchali was not an art movie, its a normal commercial movie based on a novel , and its director Satyajit Ray got Oscars for Lifetime Achievement, Please make urs knowledge on any subject clear before writing an article.

Abhai Pratap
Best Actor
by Abhai Pratap on Jan 23, 2007 10:23 PM

Leonardo is surely going to win best actor for his great performance in Blood Diamond. I am a little bit surprised over the Blood Diamond not making it to the oscar list for best movie.
