Pll relish the image of showing hindu woman suffering that too about the living conditions which were prevelant long back and not relelvant in todays world.Why cant these directors potray woman from other religions who also suffer.Shabna azmi tries to act in every film which is based on hindu woman suiffering,does she have the guts to potray asmulim woman suffering due to triple talaq,equal rights,multiple marriages,burqa etc
She has the guts to express her thoughts to the world ( even though its through movies) and that my friends lots of people in this world do not have. What most people in our community excel is being cynics and critics about things that they have no ( or almost no) clue about. They will go out of there way to bash up a person who puts the truth out there in the world. I think she made a great movie which for that matter got nominated for an Oscar. People all this negativity would be forgotten but Deepa Mehta will always be remembered as a Oscar Nominee...Bravo Deepa :-) Keep giving us good movies. And hope you do greater work in your life time.
There r many people like deepa mehta who lives on others bad.If there is no bad in Hinduism she wont survive for a minute. Yess..there has been bad things in hindu culture..so which culture is all good.And a culture as old as hinduism is bound to have some malpractices in it.And its us hindus only who has risen to occasion and improved the society.There has been lot of Socio-Religious movements in India to improve its society.I doubt that deepa mehta knows anything abt those historical movements of India and she remembers any of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chand Vidya Sagar or Dayanand Saraswati.Any person who is really concerned abt it should take some positive steps, come in front and do it(like Baba Amte, Sandeep Pandey & Medha Patekar and many more) rather just making controversial movies.I dont know what message movie "Fire" had in it and what message this "Water" might have.The one thing I am sure abt is those who can not make good social movies like Drohkaal, Ardh Satya, Ankush or Mandi make such movies in order to earn name and money.Deepa Mehta is one such person who is nothing more than an ordinary creature but wants to quick earn money and name by sticking to short-cuts.

Nobody has to play cricket to critique Indian team's efforts. Nobody has to be a movie maker to critique a movie. Nobody has to be a beauty pageant to critique another human being. If that guy were talking about his neighbor, your comments would have been inline. All these men accusing Deepa of hurting their cultural emotions are so blinded.They hate her or dislike her it doesn't matter..........because not one thing in our culture has ever abandoned,neglected,avoided,deserted,punished,harrassed,insulted,burnt alive,killed before birth a MALE child. HAS IT EVER? These men are just so disappointed that even after going through such harsh living WOMEN still made it to the top.These men just simply can't digest it CAN THEY? Tell me about one rule in the society where MEN were punished for being a WIDOWER? When were MEN burnt alive with their dead wives? When were MEN killed before they were even born? When were MEN tortured for being MEN? If a girl went our and fell in love then she was a characterless girl who brought shame to the family and be damned..............but IRONICALLY it's MAN who carries the NAME of the FAMILY?????????????????? Does this make sense to any of you WOMEN haters??????? I am a very proud WOMAN and I appreciate Deepa's effort to bring out one of the most cruel scenario that our INDIAN women faced back in time.Were these men there to support women when they were thrown in places like these and their heads were shaved off? Did men ever live in these pathetic conditions where they are not supposed to have good food,no coloured clothes,banned from all the rituals,festivals,Were men ever considered inauspicious because they were widowers? Were MEN even gotten married to someone four times thier own age? Did men ever have to follow abstinence because it was wrong to have sexual contacts if they were young or widowers?Were men ever thrown in ashrams like these to practise a secluded & deserted life "at a very young age"? Were MEN ever used as prostitues? and this from the culture where their own family women should be kept behind curtains but they would go out and mess aroung with other's daughters? Did these men ever think it as a shame that these women were abandoned because they were widows but these same so-called inauspicious women would still be considered as sex objects?
I can go on and on.......It's easy to be a MAN and not being judged but it's very difficult to be a WOMAN and NOT BE JUDGED!! I am proud to spell my name "W O M A N" and any one who has problem with Deepa's film "DON'T WATCH IT"

I'm so happy that you have tried to knock some sense into the minds of these men. Men irrespective of their caste/ creed in the subcontinent think it is their birtright to abuse women. They think they're great and pious if they make degratory remarks about women. They'll never change coz of their horrible ego which is nurtured with utmost care by an equally horrible male dominated society. You've put the right words in the right tone .. Way to go !! I am a proud Indian woman and my comment which I wrote yesterday has been removed cause according to them it is abusive. Well, it was the truth. The same truth that Param Sites has mentioned. The people here who criticise deepa mehta do so cause they know in their hearts they hv done something wrong to women and are scared for it to come out in public. I am proud of Deepa Mehta to hv the courage to do such movies.
And for people who say that why doesnt she do movies about good people, well, maybe cause everybody does movies about good people. Everyone knows all the good things done. Everybody in the whole world knows Gandhi but not everybody in the whole world knows how widows were treated in the past. I hope deepa mehta makes more movies like this based on the truth of India.

I am happy that someone gave a face to my great grandmother who was a widow at 18, had her head shaved and lived like a non-entity for the rest of her 85 years because of men like the haters below who never stood up for women. Thank you Deepa Mehta for trying.
