Why can't we talk about Oscars ?
by Neha on Feb 26, 2007 09:07 PM  | Hide replies

Anything that has a Universal appeal it related to everyone around the World. Since everyone be it a Chinese, British ,Australian,African and Indian has access to these movies it can be appreciated and criticized alike by all of us as the people of the land where Oscars come from.

Do we Indians all the time talk about things that are related to India alone.? No ? There are many things across the globe which Indians feel connected to then what is the big deal if we discuss about Oscars.
But yes I really find it funny when people compare Oscars to Filmfare and talk lowly about it. I don't find any reason for its comparison .We should be proud be proud we organize such events. And why on earth should it be as good as Oscars ? Do we by any means have the financial capacity to match the country which on the top of the world .Nevertheless we should be happy that we are at least good in our own sphere and have gained the capacity to reach ahead.Which God willing we surely will very soon.

Well said Neha. India should be judged by it's own standards and not by western standards. We shoould appreciate something which we feel good about irrespective where it stands in comparison with how it is in America or Europe. My two cents....

Why give importance to an award which doesn't mean anything to Indians or Indian movies? Useless award which is fixed long b4 by some people.

So No Indians can relate to hollywood movies?
Or is it that some do relate and those who do so are not patriotic?

And why exactly is it 'useless award'?

Thats right. In India Filmfare Awards are called as Oscars of Bollywood. But more often than not, the awards go to the undeserving ones. By far it has been the most 'unfair awards' I have come across... If you guys want to see the best talent celebrated see 'Screen Awards', where small guys but most deserving like Kailash Kher, Zubin are given awards.

Things that shocked me in this years Filmfare:
1. Dhoom Again song choreographer was not even nominated in his category. (Things that happen only in India)

2. Best playback singer Male was Shaan. Doesn't sound unfair. Read this, He wins over Atif(Tere Bin) and Zubin(Ya Ali).whew!!

3. Best actor in supporting role : Mr. Abhishek Bachchan (KANK). Akshay Kumar (Jaan-e-mann) not even nominated. I just can't control laughing at Filmfare

List goes on folks!!!

I am an Indian born and raised outside of India. I must admit, I abhor watching Bollywood films. There are barely any innovative movies, with most of the movies containing the same old predictable storyline. On top of that, acting skills are rarely anything but quality(unless you consider the hip swaying as acting).

There are of course some fresh ideas movies such as Water and some others, but those are few and far between.

It's a shame, with such a large industry and audience base, it fails so miserably at providing quality and innovative works. But then again the same can be said of the Indian cricket team.

HI,
we must remember that bollywood or any wood from India functions as an entertainer.Movie, for an average Indian ,is the magical world of Harry Potter or the surreal world of Garcez which takes him along into an imaginary planet and makes him forget all. Remember,we Indians have no other form of entertainment except movies.
TV is out with nothing to offer except incest, family feuds and the eternal saas-bahu-nanand-sauten quadrangle.
Libraries are a dream and anyway there are few takers
bingos, all night discos ......are in their infancy.
yes the industry is large and the audience base is huge but we must remember it is business and business caters only to wants not needs
so you have crisps and coke and canned food(though they have all entered and stayed) but we have song and dance and masala. If there is a diet contest it is hard for the westerner to win on nutrition basis and in oscars it is difficult for us to hold the trophy and kiss it.BUT we are TRYING AND WE WILL DO THAT. THERE IS NO STOPPING US

Which is the biggest mistake we Indians make.. its not life beyond India.. its a different market and culture. Oscars are open only for movies released in America. No foreign movie got a filmfare award either (unless of course it was released in India). Its a shame that we cry and discredit our own film artists by saying that none has been able to score an oscar.. which is not possible.... nilesh sudrania

Oscar is a forum for recognizing exceptional artist in the world of cinema. Hollywood is used as a standard because it is poineer in film making and is considered as one of the best in the industry. Indian cinema hasn't reached that standard yet and hence it is not being considered in the list. If you had observed, this year @ Oscar was called "international Oscar" for the simple reason that there were more international movies including movies from Mexico, Germany, Spain etc... This shows that other country cinema standards have improved and are now competing with hollywood. From that perspective, Indian cinema is nowhere near. This is not about culture or the kind of movies you life. This is about the standard in movies and how good cinema can get. Your message doesn't make sense because you are justifying Indian cinema which needs to improve in different areas of film making.

I do accept that he got an Oscar award, but he was not awarded for any specific movies he made, but the award is to promote oscar in India and increase the viewership of academy awards programme in India. Least to say there is no genunity in Foreign category and only we Indians pray for Oscars unlike others. thts the saddest part. Raise filmfare or any other regional awards to the level of Oscars and dont beg for Foreign COMMODITY.
