i think the belief is that an oscar award will help in winning a new segment to our movies -> western audiences. After all they are much richer than indian audiences. If a film has won as oscar maybe some westerners will watch our movie. Just a marketing tactic

I really dont know why people make Oscar a big issue....they r just awards like others like filmfare or something like that....There r some movies which r not at all good movies and nominated for the Oscars..So we need to assess the range of Oscars%u2026.I am sure there will be lot of politics going on.%u2026.So everyone wake up%u2026.Dont try to go for Oscars%u2026Our movies are far good compared to lots of movies here %u2026.I really don%u2019t think Indian cinema should get recognized as I believe its already renowned.I am just here to say my word and thoughts%u2026.I don%u2019t mean to hurt others feelings%u2026..Bye....

Fashion nights are not meant to austere white clothes

Canadian nomination has its important idea to blame the looting during the colonial rule on an alien culture, a place of barbarians where innocence was found without cuddled, pampered, exploited, or sold on TV.

After a bout of cantankerous mud throwing, they need to test their sympathy overflowing at innocence. This is not enough excuse to throw mud on a place where looking 16 years age was not the only virtue of a woman.

Had the canadian nomination got more publicity, the propaganda would have missed Ganga to find mud. They would find a concept, a message, then history... but all of that would be mud.

We cheer the better moview for saving us some more decibels from the news.Let people watch their choice movies in their home.

Water is hyped up
by Ravi Burli on Feb 27, 2007 05:21 PM

Water is hyped up. Although primarily made for western audiences hardly anyone in the west watched it. Its box office collection is pathetic. It didnt even win an oscar and its leading actors are not known for acting. Probably she expects some dumb people in India will flock to the movie because John Abraham is there. I also heard there are songs and dances in the movie. What kind of serious realistic movie has songs and dances in them? It looks like a usual bollywood movie dressed up in a serious format. She has tried both things appeal to indian audiences through song/dances/John Abraham and also western audiences through the supposed depiction of reality. She fails in both, she is neither this nor that. No conviction in the movie

I am happy that Water didnt win anything. Why always glorify poor and bad things about India. If Deepa Mehta is sincere, she should live in India and so something for the widows. Why run away to the luxary life in Canada. I hate these dual faced people. The west always want to see awful things about India and thats what she was trying to do. If you show anything good about India it doesnt make any news in west. And culprits are people like Deepa Mehta. She is NO Indian. Please everyone stop call her an Indian.

why are u guys ashamed of reality? if that hurts you i believe deepa is successful in her motive of highlighting a social issue. But if you still are glued to your computer and doing nothing about it then you are even worse.
by the way she also made hollywood bollywood - story about rich indian ( if that waht u blelieve india is all about)

I have not seen Water so I do not know how good or bad a film it is. As an Indian living in India the one thing I have noticed is that urban middle class Indians simply do not want to face the reality of how majority of the country lives.
We wish to impress the West with our fancy malls and multiplexes while 50% of Indian children are malnourished. More Indians live below the poverty line in India than anywhere else in the world. Indian also has the largest number of children who have never attended school.
We are a poor country because for so many millions of people it is a struggle merely to survive. It is this aspect of India that interests the West and not the fact that we have Pizza Hut and Louis Vuitton stores. When we come across a child selling magazines or newspapers at 10 in the morning we dont give give it a second thought. To a foreigner it is highly unusual and the first question that crosses their mind is 'why is the child not at school'.
Making a movie about poverty or exploitation of children or widows does not mean that the above are being glorified. Movies critical of India need to be seen in India first, but to Indians like yourself, reality is best ignored.

As if the westerners really care about the poor and desperate people. Do you think the rich US people really bother about the high number of Iraqis being killed in a war started by their own democratically elected leader. Do you think the British will ever issue an apology for Jallianwala Bagh tragedy, as far as i know the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy was actually praised by many people in Britain. All humans everywhere are alike, driven by the need to protect themselves and their families first, they dont have the time to bother about other peoples lives. Reality is ignored by everyone

Humiliation of Indian thru film

Why only poor, begger characteirse type of film based on Indian culture, has always nominated to Oscar? This is right from Satyajit Ray to Deepa Mehta. Can these type of ppl can not make the film based on proud and glories part of Indian culture?

Do we ever make good movies about the glories of Indian culture? All we make is overacted song and dance routines that pander to the lowest common denominator, or jingoistic nationalism with songs in between. What's the great film that you saw recently and feel should get an oscar? Rang de basanti, india's official entry? It is mediocre at best, in comparison to The departed or even blood diamond (which is a decent film, but not great).

In general, Oscar nominated movies are dark and brooding. Even films like life is beautiful is quite dark, though funny at the same time. That's the kind of movies the academy likes... Out and out commercial films like Matrix, Spiderman, etc will never win the awards...

The problem is in part due to the censor board and also due to India's intolerance to an opposite viewpoint. Plus, most of the viewers like this kind of cinema as against social dramas. (Most ppl tell me that they go to watch films to get entertained, not feel depressed.)

Regional cinema (esp in the communist states), inspite of poor funding, is way way better than crappy bollywood.

Ok, you said very correct, but what I mean to say that our very respectful director/producer of Indian cinema always chose subject which features poor or beggars type of character or negative portion of India for the sake of originality. This also include the interest of their name fame within country by so called intellectual ppl as well as in western countries.

Water in the hands of Satyajit Ray
by Gajanan Mohite on Feb 27, 2007 04:55 AM

Ray would have made a masterpiece of the story in Water. The make up was too glossy for a wonderful theme. John Abraham was a misfit. Seema Biswas was excellent. One feels that living in Canada and producing a film on great story has its flaws. The subaltern does not speak well. Pather Panchali, the way Ray kept the make up and one has to look at his films to learn , how to make a good movie of great story
much more realistically. Ray should be the starting point for this kind of cinema.

Does India really have what it takes to win an oscar?
by Julie John on Feb 26, 2007 09:47 PM  | Hide replies

It's kind of sad to know that during yesterday nights Academy Awards, the "American people" only showed just a 2 second reel from Water, a scene that showed no significance to the concept directed by Ms. Mehta. It's a shame that we still are receiving such a position in the award ceremony inspite of all the "critique acclaim" water received.

Thats ur misconception Mr. Sreekanth. Some movies are not made for mere entertainment. Water was made to pass the message about the plight of widows during British rule and still today its the same. Movie is slow but its well made.

Dear Julie,
It is intresting that you describe it as a concept. Leftists are worked to make their holy duty, that is to find an oppurtinity in bashing history of people beyong books. For many intellectual leftists, this is more than holy, not just a oncept.

that is true Narayan, the only reason y i mentioned "concept" is to deviate from the political backlash of the movie. Do not look at the movie as an Indian but as a foreigner....might not be simple but giving it a try will help understand y and for what purpose water was made.

Did other three foreign category movies got more than 2 seconds? and did you understood the concept and relevance of those movies from that 2 second clip?
Oscars is more of American ceremony and like many other things we are so obsessed with everything America does.
I am not saying Oscars is not important for us but lets not get desperate.
