Itla,

What makes you presume that fools idolize Rajini. He has both charisma and talent make note of it please. Sure (as I said in the Sivaji topic) neither is Rajini at his best in Sivaji, nor is Sivaji or for that matter one or two of his recently movies like Baba (but Chandramukhi you will agree was good) were very watchable. Which accounts for the fact that indeed his audiences are discerning in that they rejected a rank-bad movie like Baba (even though some are claiming that in terms of overall collections Baba is now more than an average grosser, but that has been during its overall run not initial and mid-run collections). However, Rajini has indeed done and has been very good in many serious movies directed by S.P.Muthuraman, Mani Ratnam, Balachander, P.Vasu etc. You have every right perhaps not to like him but you cannot deny that he is a good actor (he of course is not my favourite actor - Kamal, Sivaji and Vikram are).

You are probably over-reacting to the illogical views of Senthil. Best is to leave him alone. Pity, no one asked Senthil if he has seen either Ore Kadal or Mammooty moview in Malayalam, probably he doesn't even follow the language. Why give him importance by replying to him. He is here for the sake of criticising. No need to prove your or our manhood by replying to him.

Two wrongs do not make one right.

My dear Raghu,

I am a lover of Cinema and the movies that I can watch and and the languages I understand are Tamil, English, Hindu, Punjab and Bengali (to a limited extent). I also follow a few syllables of Malayalam (being a language very close in pronounciation to Tamil) but despite being an appreciator of Malayalam cinema, I am afraid even if I watch Manichithrathazhu (which I haven't so far)I probably may not be able to appreciate it fully because of my lack of command of Malayalam. But from what you have posted, it appears that Manichithrathazhu was the original of Chandramukhi... may be you are trying to say that the Malayalam movie was much more laid back and artistically made in comparison to Chandramukhi.... that may be.... it is also true that in content at least (but partially but not fully) the treatment of Chandramukhi was commercial. But the portrayals by Vineeth.. Jyotika, the tantrik, Nasser, the tantrik etc. were very good. In that movie too sure Rajini, acting potential wise was not the centre piece, but was competent. In the last climax portion, with Jyotika's classical dance sequence, telugu song, the movie almost acquired a classical tone. In that sense, Chandramukhi was quiet a good movie. Sure, in keeping with Rajini's image, Chandramukhi was made to revolve around him, but it was as blatantly commercial as Sivaji. You will agree that if Chandramukhi was almost non-commercial, Sivaji was the god-child mega hit of Rajini fans and no one else.

Dear Mr.Narasimhan,
Im sorry for the delayed reply. I hope u get to read this reply. Im not forcing you to make a comparison between the original and the copy.I realized u are a lover of good movies.and as such you should be seeing this movie... You will agree malyalam cinema makes some of the best pics in indian cinema. And a good cinema goer like you should watch the most loved malayalam cinema which broke all sorts of records.Even after 10 years and several telecasts, to date when the movie is aired, it takes away the highest TRP ratings.and to understand this movie you dont need language. Such is the medium of expression ( what a cinema is,actually).Your knowledge of tamil should do..tamil....all the more reson u should see it.
and talking about performance, with all respects to the performances of jothika and others, i still request you to watch Shobana and the way she carried off the national best actress award that year...
Im telling u again... make an attempt to watch this movie .in this era of CDs and DVds its not a difficult preposition. I await ur feedback after watching the movie

One correction.. one of the concluding sentences should have read in the following manner:

Sure, in keeping with Rajini's image, Chandramukhi was made to revolve around him, but it was as blatantly commercial as Sivaji.

it should have been:
'but it was NOT as blatantly commercial as Sivaji.

Sorry for the error.

hahaha Mr.Palani..i completely pity you!! your notions of acting are directly related to physique and visuals because that is what you have been accustomed to seeing and believing. That good looking people make "believable actors". Even by that count, your idea is completely bankrupt.By which scale do you say Rajnikanth, Vijaykanth, Satyaraj are good looking ? By reverse logic are these people good actors ? Bombastic dialogues, atrocious gestures, ridiculous costumes, dream sequences, item songs do not make acting. Keralites tend to equate acting with intellect. Kerala artists tend to do things with subtelty where an emotion conveys a thousand words. In tamil cinema, the 1000 words have to be spelt out and the emotion is completely lost. Even the great Chavaliar Sivaji Ganesan who started out his career as a stage artist and tried to overdo his roles in the 50-60-70s..completely change his style of acting in the early 90s to be more subtle and conveyed his emotions effectively in class movies like "Thevar Magan" etc. Being fat is not a crime at all..nor is a disadvantage of any kind. All tamil heroines from time immemorial have been buxom and fat...K.R.Vijaya, Jayalalitha,Savithri, Saroja devi etc cannot win any Miss India pagents..neither would Khushboo for whom tamils constructed a temple. In tamil nadu in General fat is beautiful...always has been. If you cannot digest class..dont shout at your neighbour...its in your genes.Cant do anything about it.

Dear Keith,

Do you mean to say that in Malayalam movies, all heroines have the ideal figure of 36-24-36. I think in general in southern movies including Tamil and Malayalam it is actually only talent regardless of the 'heaviness' of an actor that has prevailed. What do bollywood actress coming to Tamil including Kajol, Tabbu and Aishwarya Rai say... they say that southern movies including Tamil allows them to do meatier and meaningful roles in comparison to the mindless dolls they are made to play in Hindi. Now, if you have this conviction that if fat is liked, then it is not reflective of class, then you sure need to see a good psychiatrist. Shouting at your neighbour is in our genes, I guess a good number of your immediate neighbours (i.e. within your state also have this affliction). An honoured visitor from Kerala said that Mohanlal was supposed to play the villain's role in Tamil but went on to comment that Rajini developed cold feet. Pray, why would one playing the hero develop cold feet? Rightfully, the unwanted intruder was booed and shunted out of that topic. Please do not follow suit... comment based on merits.

small correction and clarification. The visitor came to the Sivaji topic (Rajnikanth rocks!!) on rediff and made those comments about Rajini developing cold feet on hearing that Mohanlal was to play the villain in Sivaji.

Further heroines in Malayalam like Sharda and Shobana were also not super slim by any standards. Neither were either Navya Nair and Nayantara when they made their debuts in Tamil cinema. However, in Sivaji, Nayantara had reduced her weight considerably.

Ore Kadal -- Film of 2007
by sajin azeez on Aug 29, 2007 11:26 AM

Syamaprasad is a film maker who can execute novelty themes to celluloid ....I had seen all of his movies..Kallu Kondoru Pennu,Agnisakshi,Akale....Now Ore Kadal....I can say this is the best from him till date...A film from novel..Many directors had failed in
this case...But Syamaprasads all ventures are from "novel(or Literature...) to cinema" ....He succeded in all these except Kallu Kondoru Pennu.......

Ore Kadal is an attempt to break all conventional themes filmed in malayalam...Nowadayz most malayalam movies are revolving around a common
pattern....comedy,fight,dance....only entertainment factors....In tamil,Hindi they are trying with many experiments....The problem is that our film makers have no guts to do something different..(Box-Office is the main reason..)But Syamaprasad and Vindhyan Brouught a meaningful cinema to Malayalam....A memorable film...whatever may be the box office fate,..this is the best film of the year till date..(This is
my review....)

Syamaprasads sceenplay and dialogues are topclass...I have never heard these type of dialogues..(Excellent...)in recent times....I give 110 out of 100 for dialogue parts.....( Earlier I watched these types of dialogues from M.T. and
Padmarajan....)Reading a good novel thatz the fealing i got from this movie watching.....That much involvement between each scenes and dialogues....Abt
Characterization Syamaprasad utilized the right talents for each...
Mammootty ... This is one of the best role he ever p

Come on Don Thomas,

I thought we are all living in a democracy. Please do not try to give or take away anyone's rights. People do have a right to discuss, praise or criticise. It is just that if they have a right to criticise, you or I have the equal right to defend what we like.

You feel this because, RajaniKanth has to do a lot of make ups which takes hours to complete to get into a good look as he looks in shivaji, chandramukhi..etc.. Yes, malayalam acters are not good, to fight against 100 ppl at a time, to stop a tornado by a hit in ground, tie up a man in an iron box and hit 15 ppl with him. Yes i agree, Rajani is a super mega star... But mammootty and mohan lal are Super Duper Actors....

No Ashraf,

Sure by all means Mammotty and Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi are all very good actors. But how are people from other regions like Maharashtra or even Tamil Nadu (where not everyone is supposed to understand Malayalam) or Karnataka, Bihar understand that they are good actors. Hindi audiences understand Hindi and watch Amitabh movies and call Amitabh, Shahrukh or Amir their favourite actors, so it goes for audiences in Kerala to rave about Mammotty and Mohanlal etc. In that manner, Rajini or Kamal or others like Vijay or Vikram are adored by Tamil audiences. So many in north cannot appreciate the popularity of Rajini or Kamal and accept them being as good and competent actors like Amitabh or Shahrukh. In the same manner there are competitive audiences in the southern states like Kerala Andhra or Tamil Nadu/Karnataka. Can you make any Kannada audience agree that any other actor is as good as Dr.Rajkumar...

But one thing.. all these actors are very competent, only that in some industries like Tamil or Hindi, actor acquires superstar or megastar status, he gets scripts with limited scope for showing his acting prowess. This obviously has its critics and sometimes with justification. But it does not mean that those actors are bad or have become bad. I have seen some Malayalam clips and Mohanlal more than other actors, tends to do these macho-type roles similar to those done by Rajini or Amitabh, for that matter. Still he is a good actor, Rajini too is.

There is something wrong with Rediff reviewers. Else how can you explain 3 stars for movie like Ore Kadal and some absolute crap movies getting 3 or 3 1/2 stars?

This is a Class Film that deserved 4 stars for Mammootty, Meera and Shyama Prasad!
