Still I would like to see a review without separating FORM and CONTENT. The review expresses the Orchestration and Lyrics. The situation and the visuals are more dominant than all in the songs.
Indeed, Ilaiyaraaja has adjusted his voice for Shreya Ghosal. Only in this album, I can see careless effort by most of the singers.
Overall, Ilaiyaraaja has started experiment again with the structure and orchestration, and the dynamics of instruments heading towards his usual 80s & 90s style whereas dynamics of voices completely different.
I want to see Ilaiyaraaja to give an album without experimentation to give a commercial hit.

you know album is released much before the film is released. so how can any reviewer write about situation and visuals without seeing the movie??

Dear Srinivas mahishi,
Thanks for your reply.
Well, the review is really nice. I agree that one cannot write about the situation & visuals without watching the movie. But, my intention is to show how we seperate the music/song from its basic objective and hijack to only the decorations in the music/song.
by all means, Ilayaraja is the most underrated genius living in India! though in recent times, his creative output has not been as prolific as in the 80s and 90s, his creative genius stands above any of his contemporaries or predecessors. It so happens that his field is cinema - had it not been for cinema, Ilayaraja would have still gained acclaim through non-filmy music albums! a rare talent, his indepth knowledge of all forms of music, rivals that of any fundamental scientist!
it is just a pity that he has not worked in many Hindi films, as the rest of India would have been equally mesmerised by his genius!
and it is also true that we dont have music knowledgeable people in the media, who are scholarly enough to write about his music!
The songs from Ajantha are pretty good (what else can be expected from a veteran of a composer like Ilyaraja who has scored music for over 850 movies and has always been a trendsetter?
Sometimes I wonder if the movies for which he composes deserve his efforts? Many mediocre films have had excellent music from him, and end up getting marketed poorly. Hope this one reaches the masses and brings him yet another success.

Well Said Shalom!, it is disheartening to see how many of his albums not getting the recognitions they deserve. Added to that music today is treated like business than anything and to Maestro music has always been a devine form of art. He set the standards high, very high, that mediocre listeners don't get it!. His music is still fresh, and you continue to hear real instruments & orchestration in this day and age of so called "remix" (where anyone makes an album using software). He is the master of true Fusion, that is also well balanced and well blended with finer schools of musics such as Carnatic, Hindustani, Western Classical, Jazz & Blues and occasionall folk that fitts very well in this milieu.
It was always frustrating to see albums after albums (including the recent Shiva) not being marketed well, but overtime I have come to terms with it. True music lovers get it, and Maestro is and has always made music for them. And we all Maestro fans, keep running into each other very often, and feels heartening!
And finally, Thank You Rediff!, this article on Ilaiyaraaja was long overdue. Especially with the current trend of Rediff Articles, I had given up hope on decent journalism.
And other readers, please (I beg you) do not use this space to express your discontent. Yes Ajantha is released in Kannada as well, and Rediff missed it, so what?. It should not affect Kannada (Siri Gannadam Gelge) . It will be really sad to see, a nice article gives way to yet another set of strong & hurtful opinions gets unleashed. Lets all remember good music has no language!. Let us not forget some wonderful Kannada Albums Maestro has gifted us over the past 3 decades.
I have gone through your article. It is good. Thank you very much for this.
I am fully satisfied about this album. I can say that after a long time ( I think after Innisai Malzhai), I am hearing these much (good)songs from a movie.
Thanks for Raaja by giving us an another good ever green album.
Thank you very much for the positive review which the album duly deserves! I am glad that it was objective and unbisaed. Since it was fact-based and elucidated so much in detail about the usage of instruments and so on, I am sure it is an educative article for those who don't understand Maestro Ilaiyaraaja completely!
Hats off to you! I request more and more such reviews on Maestro Ilaiyaraaja's compositions from you!

RE:I have heard in Kannada - Good album

Yep, its on in Kannada too. But it appears that unlike the Tamil version, the Kannada one has shoddy lyrics, atleast IMO. Listening to Mungaru MaLe makes this album (in Kannada) a non-entity. I am surprised that ppl are loving it in Kannada.

and Nenapirali by Hamsalekha also springs to mind, if I may add! Great Music Lyrics! Not taking anything from Ajanthaa's music, but it is clearly not upto the recent standards set in the Kannada industry.
