I donot agree fully with the theme of the film. If you lookat success it is attained mostly by seemingly ordinary people. It requires courage and hard work and a good deal of commonsense. If Kumar had i the first instance stuck with his insurance gig and found a way of improving his skills there was a goodpossibility that he might have succeeded. The film's theme really is the fickleness and short term tinking of the protagonists.

The movies is very realistic, it explains at the end that you need to concentrate your energy at one given point and have patience.

Mayakanadi was an above average film, perhaps the songs and its picturisation were not that great to make an impact. And other fact is the audience cannot understand the scenes where he tries to become an actor. Those scenes were not relevant to the context of the film.Other scenes are where the heroine avoided being raped while going to a rich person's house. It was partly dramatized.Middle class, upper middle class and lower class audiences can reasonably be able to identify with this film.

This is cheran filim - as a director
by vasanthan murugan on Apr 24, 2007 02:56 PM

My kind request is ,concenterate only abt story,If the story is ok for you, then go for acting. i cant fell the real story. All of known u are well.U can do anything, but it should be as it is.Even though u have done a good dance, the face expression and body language is not coincide with that character.Any body can do dance, but not direct a good filim.Hence go with ur way as a director, and direct with the new facer.Because u are good director.my review will come ur next filim also.cheran-Director

This is not Cheran film - Not even a feel of it
by venkatachalam on Apr 22, 2007 05:46 AM

This review is really mis-leading. This kind of "Reality Bites" stories are many in Tamil and most of them are well-filmed than this one. Honestly Cheran is able to manage only emotional subjects well and not this kind of casual acting stories. Right from beginning, acting is very amateuristic and we are not able to involve in the movie. Even Ilayarajas' voice is annoying for first 2 songs. Only the last one in jail is okay. Cheran / Navya manages to catch our attention only in last 20 minutes of climax scenes. This movie is definitely not worth a watch. Cheran should consider himself as a director. He can act only when he has strong storyline to balance out (his sneaky prformance). Navya also should loose some weight. Chennai-la hotel server-ku kooda bike rate ellam theriyum.

Cheran, sorry to say this..."Unga padam manasila ottave ille. Neenga preview paarthirundhalum padam ivlo izhuvai-a irukku nu feel panniruppeenga. Epdi miss pannineenga? Comedy is definitely missing. Mozhi padam paarthirupeenga. It was a real good one. Aadum Koothu padam ungalukkaha kandippa parppom. All the best"

Semi-Urban might like it
by Vignesh on Apr 21, 2007 11:14 AM

A collection of messages binded in a 3 hr movie. The plot is fine, but screenplay makes a boring experience.

The movie would be a thought provoking for a lower-middle class youth, or a village lad working in urban, For others for sure, this movie is junk. Overall the movie minus Cheran casting - slow pace is another Cheran agmark movie.

Not a must watch but worth seeing movie.

WHY I HATE MAYAKANNADI
by shyam sundar on Apr 20, 2007 05:19 PM

I wonder what made Rediff rate the movie this way. It has a weak story. Kind of creating a negative impact on youngsters. Cheran is a good director but a poor actor.
Imagine watching a laborious film for over three years. Mayakannadi has no magicalso no logic...Waste of money and energy.......

The funniest part Cheran is trying to tell, One can become No. 1 with his core skills, not with the fantasy created by others. Firsly he should tell him self, becoz, his core skills are, dealing with Human relations in a village mileu. The movie is total crap, that too, his hairstyle is the biggest comedy of 2007.
I think REDIFF, doesnt have taste at all, with out seeing the movie they are reviewing i suppose.

not a good movie
by uma devi on Apr 16, 2007 09:41 PM  | Hide replies

I feel that cheran has stretched his limits and has made an bad or at the best an average film in Mayakannaki. I liked most of his earlier films and I still think he is one of the better directors that tamil cinema has today. But he has stretched a subject for 3.5 hours with songs that stop the film from moving forward on a weak screenplay. Probably if he had reduced the film length by an hour and had someone else act as hero it would have been better...The characters in the film are real and everything but you donot feel much sympathy for the guy when he goes to jail in the second part of the movie....I also feel he made the screenplay and the story that way just to fit his image on the screen...Over all I think a very poor product from cheran.
