shabana is the schizophrenic?
by Tiara Tony on Dec 06, 2010 11:12 PM

Well..that's a gud way to interpret the end but I quite didn't understand it. If it is true, then how would you explain the scene where joydeep goes for a walk with meethi wyl her family has some get-together going on and returns home late to the fury of anjali? During the walk he couldn't have been talking all the while to a fiction from anjali's (shabana's) mind!
The comment however gives a better explanation. But even that sounds very far fetched. I mean, ok, meethi is at peace now. And the normal people should not try to understand her world. But the movie ends in a way to show that she got lost in the streets! Where is she? Wut happened to her??

Best movie I've watched?
by Pradeep L on Nov 27, 2007 01:12 PM

It was my second attempt that I watched the movie completly. First attempt lasted only 5 minutes. Am I glad I watched this movie now. Better late than never, don't they say?

I can understand that Mithi could be Anjali's figment of imagination or could be the sane one. Anjali is the schizophrenic. The psychiatrist looks confused enough to for once make you believe that he too could be having 'issues'. When Anjali starts asking for '12 Park Avenue' in Mithi's way, it gives you an eerie feeling.

Abrubpt? It is like trying to provoke an audience into a dialogue than just give a speech (monologue). She has made us think. Think so much that I might see the line between sanity and the other side blur faster.

Rahul Bose - I still can't figure out his role. I am not able to tell with the same confidence if he too is a schizophrenic, an aid or an imaginary character. But who ever said his acting was bad has no clue what real art is.

Movie - TOP NOTCH!

I think this movie was brilliant. The ending could have been better, but hey, I still loved it.

Folks, the movie as good as it is, its quite delusional. DO you all want to know the secret of the movie....there is no Mithi as a real character....its an illusion of Shabana's...the real schizophrenic is Shabana Azmi......got it....think about it????

Nice interpretation. However, I have a different view point. May be:
Mithi finally found '15 Park Avenue and her family', thus ending her quest. She is now at peace with "her" world. Finally, she is happy. On the other hand, everyone else, the 'normal' folks are still trying to understand Mithi's world. Being normal, they never will. Their quest to understanding the illness never ends.....resulting in life-long unhappiness and pain! May be it is time for 'normal' folks to accept a situation like that and just live. Easier said than done, I guess.

Yes i agree. I think Rahul Bose is too good and actor to be in this movie. This movie is an absolute waste of material like him.
The storyline is too dull and the acting too artificial. I wouldn't recommend anyone to watch this movie. There are better Rahul Bose movies out there.

15 Park Avenue
by Avinash Sharma on Mar 25, 2006 06:42 PM

Well, in the end, Meethi seems to have found 15 Park Avenue after all and will live happily ever after. And that is what we would like to believe too. But at the same time, we cannot help but dread that Meethi is lost forever.
That exactly is my criticism of the film. The ending is too abrupt. Aparna Sen has left it to the viewer to decide whether Meethi couldreally find meaning and fulfilment in her life.
The storyline itself presents a couple of inconsistencies. While Anjali informs the psychiatrist that Meethi liked to stay all by herself as a child, yet she contradicts herself when she tells the doctor later that Meethi was well adjusted and liked to hang out with friends.
Also, it is unclear how Meethi could fail to recognize the very person who is the centre of her delusional system.
However, that being said, Aparna has indeed broken away from the negative stereotypical way in which ECT is potrayed in most of Indian cinema.
The film has also highlighted the burden of living with a schizophrenic relative sensitively.
The issue of marriage of the mentally ill has been dealt with maturely - Anjali and her father discuss the illness candidly c Jojo

Weak Movie
by Soup on Mar 09, 2006 01:35 AM

I think Rahul Bose has been completely wasted in the movie. With a brilliant actor like him, his character has been very weakly sketched and basically we feel the movie has been made with a lot of effort, all gone to waste. There isn't a satisfactory conclusion to it. Atleast not to my point. My two cents...others may beg to differ.

hi!
although i completley believe that whenever a movie is made, each one of the massess who had bought the ticket, has a right to comment on it.so anything and everything which people say should be given importance.similarly i too have to voice my opinion.if people think that the movie made was \"not that great\",or interpret that shabana aazmi was schizophrenic ,must look up the APA( american psychiatry assocaition mannul) to know what is schizophreinia.its appaluling that in the 21st century where people have advanced enough to go and splurge money and buy a 150 rupees ticket, the senstivity towrds individual diffrenecs have not been met.people still think that schizphrenia is a taboo for that matter any \"psychogical movie \"is intertaining just cz it deals with \"such topics \"which we all percieve wnt ever cincern us.
people also call it the domain of \"arty directors\",who makes \"such movies\".the fact is that its not the art which is displayed but the part of reality, whcih exits betwenn us ,but is seldom paid attention too.
i would advice all the people to watch that moive not bacause beng a psychology student,i thing its wonderfull,bt as humns it helps us to grow

I also find it "appaluling" and "intertaining" that in the 21st century "massess" have no "senstivity" or "cincern" "towrds" learning decent ENGLISH. You must look at "mannul"s "cz" as "humns" it "helps us to grow".

THE END
by Namrta Batra on Jan 23, 2006 01:26 PM  | Hide replies

A lot of people seem to have drawn a conclusion about the movie even without understanding it. The end essentially conveys that Shaban herself was a schizophrenic and hallucinated about her sister. The entire movie therefore was nothing but a figment of her imagination.
