Rahman palyed a suave and cool character in movies like "Waqt". Nana Patekar in Angaar and Agnisaakshi did a good job. Amrish Puri's Mogambo was a good too but it was totally unreal. Pran,Ranjeet,Jeevan were consistent performers as villians in the 60's,70's. Danny Denzongpa as Kancha Cheena in Agneepath was one of the best. But Ultimately its Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh who steals the lime light. That was a character played for the ages and undoubtedly he was the best villian character potrayed
The greatest Villan of all time...hummmmm Amjad Khan the Gabbar Singh......the mix of terror and realness of the villian. No body in the bollywood industri still touch with the villianess of the Gabbar charcter. Even after 30 years every 7-70 years human remember the dialoge" Thakur yeah haath mujhe de de". Undoubtly the Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan)the greatest villian of all time in Bollywood film industry.

Talk about villainous role-players and the names that lead the filed are Pran Saab, Kanhaiyyalal, KN Singh, Amjad Khan, Amrish Puri, Ajit. Each had a unique style of their own. Be it Dilip saab vs Pran / Kanhaiyyalal, Amitabh vs Amjad/ Amrish, it was truely enjoyable fare. Lets stop short of this greatest / best debate.. each was a master in their own yard!!
I am really surprised that no one has mentioned Pran. Do you know in last 40-50 years(after the avtaar of Pran on Indian panaroma)has been named as Pran. He was the pioneer of chain smoking monster.Even today a glimpse of chain smoker make us afraid of his credentials.There are many person who can come and go from bollywood screen but the stamps Pran has made no one can match.
I think amrish puri deserve the best because he has played a long innings as avillain.Amjad khan as a gabbar singh has a only film which i think best but puri saab has many films to be remembered his expressions,voice getups are marvellous so puri saab is the best.
The meanest villain ever is DANNY DENZONGPA for his role as "Katya" in Ghatak...the way he "dog collars" Kashi Nath (Sunny Deol)'s father and tell him to lick his boots was awesome!!!!
