@Abhi and Diwakar,
u south indians often forget that south india is only a small part of india. and that there is much more in india than in tamilnadu or andhrapradesh. this is why u r so ill-minded people. u guys are all frogs living in a well and think of as if the well is the entire ocean. come out of that well, and see hindi, bengali, gujrati punjabi....movies, music, culture and then i bet u won't dare to consider ilayraja or rajnikant as par with any of the Phalke awardees. How many awards did these south Indians win from abroad? Do u know that there is an actor (Soumitra Chatterjee) in Kolkata who has been awarded the highest award of France in 2001, and has still not won the Phalke award? And regarding Suchitra sen, don't even dare making a comment as you don't know anything about her. She deserved the prize twenty years ago, not now. Do you know that she is the first Indian actress to have won the best award from a foreign film festival (back in 70s in Moscow).
I have gone thru your report on Suchitra Sen winning Phalke award. Your reporter has gone through a cross section of people to assess their reactions to the news. These reactions range from "average" to "very poor". While most are "average", Mr legend (!) Sunil Gangopadhyay's comments are of very poor quality. He has included his own name to the award by bringing in what he used to think about Sen during his young years. He is a mass producer of average prose & poetries. And also a feudal don of literary Bengal. Nothing better could have come out of him.....To the millions of commoners such as myself Suchitra Sen is Suchitra Sen is Suchitra Sen is Suchitra Sen......
Sunil Ganguly must be out of his mind to say that both Suchitra sen and Uttam kumar were goodlooking, sans acting skills. Satyajit Ray wrote 'Nayak' thinking of Uttam Kumar, and said later that Uttam had surprised him (with his own touch in acting) many times during shooting of Nayak. Also, I suggest Mr. Ganguly to watch "Aandhi'if he has any doubt about Suchitra Sen's acting capabilities. Thanks.
I think she has the right to accept the award or not. It should be entirely her wish there is no opint of debating on this issue. But yes she surely deserves this award but the sad part is it's been recognized by the Govt. so late. But as goes the saying better late than never, at last she got what she deserved.

Dear MALAY,
I really agree with ur views ,she must come forward to accept the greatest honour in Indian Cinema and enchant the whole audience. That will rejuvinate all the glorious earlier moments.
"Dada shahev phalke" is a great as well as a noble award in indian panorama.But there are so many questions arising when the same is to be awarded such a successful proudy lady like "Suchitra Sen".She would accept or ignore the award, that is her personal matter.I do think,she has to take the award when president of India is giving it.She has to break her long silence !!!!!! for the sake of her admirer .
"According to another neighbour, banker Mainak Basak, "It won't be proper on Sen's part to refuse an award conferred by the President of India." Quote.
The President of India only disburses the awards that are decided by the babus, many of whom are just plain stupid and often trade the awards.
However, it will not be a surprise at all if Kalam Saheb himself goes to where Suchitra lives today and gracefully hands over the award to Suchitra, a great overall personality that Bharat Varsh could be proud of.
Too much is being voiced in the media nowadays on behalf of too many people on too many issues.
By indulging into such an unnecessary exercise the media often drags an unsuspecting glory into undue controversy.
Media has no business to do this.
If they wanted to interview somebody, they should interview Suchitraji herself.
Yes, she should accept it at least for the masses who used to love her and cannot even forget even today after so many decades of her excile. And moreover it is India's one of the coveted awards.
Great news. Honouring the past generation of film personalities is the right way to show them how much we appreciate their talent and contribution. In this context, perhaps the legendary Bhanumati could have been similarly honoured with this award - she was a colossus and a woman of prodigious talent and versatility - actor, singer, writer, director and music director besides being an excellent dancer. Alas, it's too late now - but one can't help feeling that artistes from the South are not recognized as much as they deserve - the examples are too numberous - Bhanumati, Balamuralikrishna, S Rajeswara Rao, MS Viswanathan, Ilaya Raja - too many names that evoke no emotion in the North. The national media paid little attention when Bhanumati or Rajeswara Rao passed away - certainly less attention than was paid to the passing away of Bhagawan or Nadia! What a pity...
