amtarmahal..only for sensitive souls
by kanika on Nov 23, 2005 03:47 PM  | Hide replies

saw antarmahal..I am no confirmed fan of the Ghosh repertoire, but I must say, no film has dealt with the issue of marital rape so well. There is a discord..no, I have not read the story on which the film is based, but the romance between the choto bou and the potter s evidently not suposed to be highlighted.
In the mileau where the husband steams away at his wife, discussing mundane things like the heat of the summer, how humd it is..only serves to higlight the callousness with which he treats the relationship. In his mind, the relationship he has with his wife is only a series of copulations..to have a khoka..son, heir. There is, to my mind, hardly any sex in the film, only the disgusting form of bigotry, that unveils the true nature of the landed gentry in those times..be it Bengal ro anywhere else.
The man's contempt of the potter's language...sets the seal on his ignorance and as the painter calles him, uncouthness.
No, the film is not fr people looking for CTs..the so called sex scenes could not have been more banal...
Rupa Ganguly is the star of the fim, feminine wiles, hurt by the husband who , she knows, is barren himself...LOVED every minute of the 2 hours..

No, he did his own dialogue and dubbing in Bengali. In fact, he was nominated at the Locarno International Film Festival for Best Actor!

Antarmahal Review
by Santanu on Nov 02, 2005 10:06 AM

There's a factual error: Jackie Shroff's voice was dubbed. In fact the films credits refer to four voice artists who dubbed various voices. Please do rectify in the review
regards

Antarmahal - another disaster of Rituparna after 'Asukh'
by Mayoushree Debnath on Oct 31, 2005 08:45 PM

Not exactly sure about the identity of the person writing this review, but I feel that she is from the same team of Rituparna. He is the most reputed directors of the recent times directing a number of good movies, but that doesn't mean that whatever he does is fine.I am a great supporter of his movies and style, but this 'Antarmahal' is just far from being a good movie. For argument and facts all of us should sit together, and then the points can be proved, but just don't state this to be a 'must watch', rather it is a 'donot watch' movie.
Thanks.

SRK

There are 10 articles abour SRK turning 40. Congratulation SRK. I have not seen a single article on Oct 02 (Gandhiji b'day - if anyone does not know). Does this not mean that rediff.com is truely commercial web site. Shame on editor. Those days are gone when editorial columns were meaningful. Now all the pages belong to PAGE 3.

I agree. Gandhi is forgotten and Khan is the new hero. While wishing happy birthday, I want ask what is his social contribution to the poor and weaker sections, other than some public service ads?

Hey Pal,

Did't I tell rediff people some time back that its high time now they accept that Khan/Johar/Chopra at all hold some equity in their web site ?

This would surely help us 'innocent' reader.

Rajesh

Antarmahal: Commercialism at its best!
by Paroma on Oct 30, 2005 12:28 AM

Antarmahal....a compact commercial package for those so called intellectuals, and for those who tend to watch such movies to join the sacred group of intellectual! Commercialism wearing the mask of Art, it is evident from the starry cast, (but agreeing the fact that commendable performance from one and all, credit goes to director to some extent!!)
The director surely was busy portraying and detailing all those dark secrets of society n women, which ofcourse helped the film get an 'A' tag which again is a very good commercial attraction these days I guess, in midst of all he forgot to tell us the story of the new bride's romance with the potter, couldnt capture the subtleness of their romance on screen, ofcourse he might have tried it out in his own way, but as an ordinary audience I was bit what to say confused, was that a scene of romance when Soha Ali Khan was looking at Abhishek Bhachhan's muscular back, while he tried to catch the cat!?! Apart from this little mis out, thats the story line (might be director's or mine, but i tried my best to figure out the romance which was there in the story by which the film is inspired) everything else was fine, explicitness and inflated facts made it cheap in some place (but again you need them for commercialism, cant help it right?!)...
Thought of Raincoat while going to the theater n remembered Chokerbali while coming back!!
