Duties of a Critic
by Bragadeesh Srinivasan on Jun 21, 2005 10:03 AM

I have seen readers assail reviewers for 'judging' a movie when I thought that WAS their job. The argument is if the movies did well at the box office, how could they be trashed by the critics?

So, KK below, taking this a little far, asks the reviewer to compartmentalize reviews as "good for college students", "great for kids"!! Like 'Star Wars' is "good for beings from planet Naboo". Somehow, according to him, that won't be personal judgment.

Why should reviewers look at the box office collections of a movie or the prevailing pulse of the majority before they write reviews (drab though they are). Movie Reviews are opinions on the traits of a movie by individuals. They could be more objective, for sure. But again, I don't think there is an ISO-9000 standard for 'objective movie reporting'. There could never be, for movies are a very personal experience.

In fact, what is most irritating is reviewers who use this space to flaunt their vocabulary (which they seem to have hurriedly picked from a 20 rupee pocket Thesaurus).
And about Indian movies, they deserve the bad reviews they get. I wish them more bad reviews and more miserable times at the box office.

Star wars: An utter waste of time!
by Vivek Sharma on May 23, 2005 10:38 AM

I watched Star Wars; all hype, no substance. The aura of Lucas had got a full house, and there were people clapping in the end. I hear the reviewers have gone gaga over it and in Cannes the movie got standing ovations at both the beginning and the end. I am aware that this movie is going to shatter the records of big openings and there would be millions hailing it as the GRAND FINALE TO the genius of LUCAS! I differ.

The screenplay is average, the dialogues are forgettable, verging on being pathetic. The characters are trite, oversold and fail to "act". I came out feeling cheated, for after all this fanfare, after all the big talk, after the mass hysteria I expected a "good movie". But alas, what was offered was a flashy piece of cheap metal which would sell as gold for the buyers have been fooled into believing that they are getting something valuable.

Go watch the movie:)! Make your own assessment! I know my writing it off will neither prevent most people from watching it nor from hailing it as one of the best movies they have ever seen. But take away the name of the director and the past successes of Star Wars movies, and you will see how ordinary, how utterly carelessly m

Please guide your critics for writing positive review.
by KK on May 20, 2005 05:44 PM

Somehow I feel, rediff has been more critical to hindi movies then the english ones. Recently the so called bad hindi movies (according to your critics) had done reasonably well with audience. I hope you understand your responsibilities more clearly, you are suppose to guide different section of viewers to the movies of their liking (you could say great for kids, good for family, enjoyable by collegiates etc instead of giving their(critics)personal judgements) And ofcourse it is not in your duties to see that producer does not make any money by giving bad review just after first show of the movie.
