Paheli

I loved the movie. Amol Palekar is one director with guts. He did not compulsorily made Rani go back to her huaband, just because thats what is 'expected'. In today's world a woman can make a choice. I think it is one of the best movies i have ever seen.... Thanks Amol for telling such a wonderful story.

Paheli - ought to see it
by Meenal Kulkarni on Jul 01, 2005 11:24 PM

Just read the interview, fabulous! I haven't seen the film yet but I feel as if I'm going to book the tickets right away. Although it seemed that Amol Palekar is being defensive about his differences with Shah Rukh, if at all they exist. Overall, the reviews are great and I'm looking forward to see the movie. Hope it matches my expectations!

Cheers!
Meenal

I don't beleive this!!!
How people steal themes, stories and plots and that too high calibered actor, producer, director like Amol Palekar?!. Shahrukh Khan might be a good actor, no doubt about it.
This story, plot, theme is stolen from Girish Karnad's Nagamandala Play, in which the husband leaves the newly wed for mistress on the Nuptials night. Its the Ego of the husband which makes him neglect his wife. She share her sorrow with good samaritan an old lady who gives her a root which can be concocted, and to be fed to the husband. Due to her fear, she throws the it on a anthill in which a snake lives. Now this snake gets attracted to the lady and takes the form of her husband and fulfils the requirement or rather yearnings of the lady. This is fantastic fairy tale of love. The husband starts to suspect her as the lady who is unaware of the snakes disguise treats the husband well. Husband further finds the tell-tale signs of love-making. He informs the village panchayat and his wife has to go thru a test to prove chastity. The test is to put her hand into a anthill and hold the snake. She readily agrees and pulls out hte snake. This snake happens to be the one who disguised as her husband. So the snake doesnot bite her and she is proved innocent and chaste. This leaves her husband puzzled but the story has a happy ending.
Well, this is the story of Girsh Karnads Nagamandala. Doesn't it sound familiar shah rukh Khan, Amol Palekar?!! You owe royalty to Girish Karnad. You should do it.

Please go and read Vijay Dan Detha\'s Duvidha on which Paheli is made and due credit for which has been given in the movie\'s opening credits - that has been written before Girish Karnad wrote Nagamandala - does that mean Girish Karnad stole it from Duvidha -

I think it is very stretched imagination on your part to compare Paheli and Nagamandala - to me they don\'t sound similar at all.

The \"soul\" of the movie lies in Laachi knowingly accepting the \"ghost\" as her husband whereas in Nagamandala that is not the case - and this is a huge difference -
