Superb!

Thanks Jackie...for making indians feel proud of our nation's tradition. Kalari is no less than Kung fu or Karate. Sadly, it had been a forgotten art and never went beyond Kerala.
Now with an international superstar promoting it in his movie, we cant expect a better publicity. Till now, Indians were shown in hollywood as beggars, slaves, fakirs or snakecharmers. Hope, after this movie, western movie goers come to know that we are on par with them in all aspects.

Kalaripayyatu is also a Martial Art!
by Jerryl Varghese on Jun 08, 2005 07:14 AM

Agreed, the world has been ignorant of Kalaripayyatu for a long time, while they were knowledgeable of the martial arts from China, Japan and Korea.

It is good to know that we can show everyone that this martial art of my homestate that inspired Kung fu.

In fact, it was the Indian Buddhist monk Batuo who set up the Shaolin Monk, the fabled home of China's martial arts. Boddhidharma left Kerala and taught some mediation (yoga like movements that the Chinese call the Eighteen Lohan hands) and basic exercises (called Sinew Metamorphosis) to the physically weak monks of the Shaolin temple.

Even though the Chinese had yoga like arts (called Chi Kung) millenia before, same as us Indians, it wasn't very well known to the Shaolin monks. The combination of these two forms resulted in Shaolin Kung Fu, a martial art which sought to make the fighter superhuman.

Kung Fu experts can fight for hours without weakening and can shrug off direct blows that would kill normal human beings etc. This is a result of the yoga like training that is a part of Shaoling Kung Fu.

Enough with the history lesson. Go India, go! :) Show the world that you mean business.

Well said...Rediff shoudlnt showcase this achievement and Bollywood's skimpy girl's skin show in the same plane. Brand 'India' should be promoted in the right way by Indians. When a chinese superstar does so much to bring indian tradition to limelight, our media should go one step forward and let americans notice it...
