It is really outrageous...neways HUMTUM was a masala movie like any other film that was released so i think even shahrukh deserved an award for DDLJ or say DTPH or KKHH in those years. I don't think there was any special acting required to give away a national award now a days it seems like like just a little arm twisting and yo gets an award...Infact Shahrukh Khan whose Swades was much better than HUMTUM in terms of acting and storyline and very much deserved it ...May be "Saif's sheer ease, sublety and spontaneity in potraying a complex and demanding role" as said by jury members were not noticed by Filmfare or IIFA or any other awards. It is not just dat Shahrukh didn't get award but the National award which has lost the glory once it had is given just to any one who does a song & dance movie. Even other actors deserved in other movies other than hindi cinema. Maybe the jury member are too partial just because the actors mother is Chair person of some board.
all film awards go to Shah Rukh Khan for Swades and Veer Zaara and we have the national award being given to Saif who is not even near to what SRK did in Swades or Veer Zaara

National award or film fare award or any other award all these awards are politically motivated nothing to do with acting skills.
If you compare Saif with yester years winners of this award he is as good or as bad as they were. So it makes no difference who won this award. People will not remember such awards.
I think only the last year there was a stiff competition between Hrithik Roshan Hindi Hero and Vikram Tamil Hero. Vikram is better actor with dashing personality than many of the Hindi heroes. But all the same the acting of Hrithik Roshan in Koi Mil Gaya was dam good. It was much better for the indian cinema and National Awards itself if they got that award combined.
Shahrukh was beeter than Saif (swades vis a vis Hum Tum), however, its a shame that till today light comic roles never get the awards that they deserve. How many at times have we ached for a Jim Carey to get an Oscar, even Govinda lost out on Best actor, to other actors in romantic or melodranatic roles. We need to wake up to the fact that comedy is serious acting, and the fact that after Govinda, Saif is perhaps the only lead actor who can CONSISTENTLY carry off a lead comic role every time.
I think Saif carried the transition from being a geeky 20 yr old to a mature 30 yr old really well without even once being reduced to a caricature, and for this he deserves his accolades.
Lets stop being mean, and hand it over to the National award jury for making a bold decision.
I do however have 1 point. Raincoat was awarded the best film in the Best Feature Film in Hindi award category, while Page 3 bagged the Best Film award. But wasnt Page 3 in Hindi?? so, what was the point in giving raincoat a separate award. Also giving Veer Zara an award for Most Popular Film is as stupid as it goes.

It ridiculous to nominate Saif for best actor award (National!) that also for a movie like Hum Tum. It is a shame for us that an actor of the caliber like Mr.Soumitra Chatterjee never got National Award. Authorities should be more careful in choosing the juries in future
