Artistic Anglophiles- Waning of A nationalism
by Dharmendra Goel on Aug 26, 2005 07:32 AM

PKL. Friday , 26th Aug. 2005.
Be it Junoon , Shatranj Ke khilari or latest Mangal Pandey by artists and directors as diverse as Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal and latest Ketan Mehta and his AmirKhan 's Pandey / William Gordon,it is the same reservationist irrational pro -British artistic
universalism as one reads in the pages of Rabindranath's classic Gora ,or the drum-beats of col
Outrum by the Lucknow residency spiriting away the effete rake hapless Wajid Ali Shah while the Mirza & Mir are busy in their moves on the Chess -board.
What surprises the Indian films is this surprising
waning of the sentiments of that nationalism that led
Chabili, Zafar ,or Tantya along with the indomitable
Maulavi Ahmedullah Shah of my Town of Faizabad to risk all to oust the Firangis from Hindustan..Rana
Beni Madho meeting the young Hermit Swami Dayanand
before martyring himself to Col Neil's killing reprisals...We hear of a cetain courtesan Azizan of Kanpur a lover of Tantya but our Anglo philes because of their secret sense of guilt to have basked under British make them side-step nationalism..D. Goel
Gora,
