Hello ... we do not need a Sudhir Mishra to comment about `Black'. It is singularly the BEST film to come out of Bollywood in the last 50 years !!! I pity rediff though ... first you wrongly review Black (which was shredded to a million pieces by my fellow readers) .. then you try to declare Black a flop (incidentally, the film has grossed 30 crores plus !!) ... and now this !!!! We dont need comments from a nobody like Sudhir Mishra, whose films are trashed by critics and public alike. Mr. Mishra, if Black is not a brilliant film, then is `Calcutta Mail' one ????
Sudhir Mishra is one of the few people in this business who has always spoken his mind. Black is clearly the most overrated film of recent time and Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the most overrated filmaker in our country today. Comparing Black to Kieslowski's masterpices are nothing but a joke. And Mishra is dead right when he uses the word facist.
finally a bollywood chap who speaks of his heart. three cheers. indians - learn how to encourage the few good people. go watch the movie he made, its worth. if you do not respond, such voices will fade away before you realize.
is this the rediff way of getting back at the readers after we shred your "black" review to a million pieces? sudhir mishra interview could well have had another title. come on you guys at rediff, dont try to prove a point by saying "look, he says it is crap too". accept that the majority of discerning readers liked it. stop acting childish.
At last I found a director who's views on black reflect mine completely. I watched this movie, and could not stand it beyond halfway. I just walked out of the theater midway. I cudn't take the way it was shot, the way the characters were developed. It was too loud and too manipulative. Good to read people voice their opinions instead of blindly following the trend and singing praises of this highly over-rated movie.
I guess we need more people from the film industry to give honest and educated critique on the film "Black". Bhansali needs to be told of his shortcomings as a director and not be glorified all over. Sudhir Mishra's absolutely right when he says Bhansali is a "visual" guy and perhaps technically ahead. In my opinion, when it comes to casting and directing his actors, Bhansali has a long way to go - however a perfectionist he may be looked up as. I really wonder when will Indian filmakers come out of melodrama, hero worship and get down to making something "real". They ought to realise that reality sells as much on the commercial bench. Not having a song and playing with colors/ visuals is not the end to cinema; these are additions to great storytelling and acting.
I wish Sudhir Mishra would use his new-found fame to promote his earlier films. I, for one, would kill to get my hands on a DVD of 'Yeh Woh Manzil Toh Nahin'. It's a shame that even in the age of Internet shopping and DVDs, we are denied access to the best of Hindi cinema. Will some distributor/marketing whiz please figure out a way to get alternative Hindi films onto DVDs and then get those DVDs on to Amazon.com or some other such site?
Well, I am from the kolkata of late 60s & 70s. There was a movie Mrinal Sen made - Calcutta 71 ... it was a pathbreaker, covering five decades from 30s.
I am so interested in seeing Sudhir's film on that lost period. But, why does he have to be contrarian with Black? Just for effect?
