Sin City

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. But the days of constructive criticism is gone. The reviewer also is taking someone else's opinion in order 'not' to watch a movie means simply that he/she does not recognize his/her individuality. Its sad that works of art are reduced to being written about by people of this mindset and attitude.

Why I Won't Respect Your Review
by Stosh on Apr 07, 2005 10:50 AM

Don't you love it when people criticize a movie they haven't seen? Is there any reason to take this guy's "reasoning" seriously? After all, he chose his opinion of the movie based on OTHER PEOPLE'S comments! How intelligent is that??

Oh, and on top of that, he flat-out lied! He said, "And now, as I read the reviews -- which are not surprisingly very divided...". Very divided? Go to the Rotten Tomatoes web site, and you will find 166 reviews of Sin City. 80% of them are positive. That's 4 out of 5! Divided? Yeah, right!

Ignore this review, as you should any comments anyone makes about a movie, book, or whatever, that they don't have first-hand knowledge about. It is one of the most original and entertaining movies I've seen in years. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. The violence is comic-book style (Duh! It IS a comic book!), and there is enough humor to keep you giggling as you watch the black-and-white blood spurt! See the movie, and have fun!

Look at the newspaper he is quoting..
by Sivram on Apr 06, 2005 07:41 AM

"Richmond Times Despatch". I bet all my money this newspaper hardly has more than 2000 subscriptions.. You cannot just 'Google" "Sin City review" & write a summary of the articles that showed up. Be creative.

And, if you were trying to draw attention, you did for all the wrong reasons.

redefining ''constructive'' criticism
by piyush on Apr 06, 2005 01:26 AM

It is really impressive that this "critic"(for want of a better(or worse) term) has 'reviewed' a movie without even watching it.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but when your opinion is going to affect others' judgement, u should at least make it objective.
It is really irresponsible of rediff to have poted this review.

dear mr. pais,

this would have suited much better in a blog, a rediff blog if you may. people have been haggling all across whether and when to allow reviews to be published and you abuse your authority that you have with rediff by proclaiming this!

if you wanted to find out how many people would follow you, you could have done it by posting this on your blog.

c'mon watch the movie, i bet you would have seen passion of the christ, which dare i say gory to me

y u should watch Sin City
by Chimi Changa on Apr 05, 2005 01:34 AM

This is the first film review I have ever read in which the writer has not even seen the movie. You should have at least attempted to see the movie (u are free to walk out if you cant stand it) before proceeding to review it. You have committed the cardinal for any reviewer - forming an opinion on heresay.
There is no doubt the film is violent. But this is not the most violent film I have seen. That honour goes to "Passion of the Christ" which under the garb of a "relegious" movie or a "depiction of what happened to Jesus" goes on to show a a whole lot of blood and gore. In "Sin City" the violence is stylized (though it is not comical like you seem to suggest) and is in black and white. Each of the scenes is just as in the comic book and most people who have read the comic knew what to expect. The look of the film is worth the price of the ticket. 3
SEATTLE TIMES
Miller's many fans are likely to hail this as a masterpiece. Rarely has an artist in one medium been so loyally served by another.
TONY TOSCANO
Technically the film is a masterpiece.
ROGER EBERT
It's a visualization of the pulp noir imagination, uncompromising and extreme. Yes, and brilliant.

who cares?
by rsm on Apr 04, 2005 10:54 PM

What you watch or not watch does'nt matter. The movie is making big bucks in the US opening. And many reviews are making it a must-see Noir classic. If you did'nt go beyond the gore and see any beauty in all the in "Kill Bill" you missed the point; Just keep watching crap from Disney, which I am sure will not offend your sensibilities. And Oh, BTW, I am sure you will watch "Sin City", because all this protestation of not watching it is probably just to write a contrarian opinion and get the review published.

how bias!
by Sumier on Apr 04, 2005 10:46 AM

if only u'd done some research u;d see that the movie is based very faithfully on Frank Miller's classic graphic novels. They capture the essence of his stories, a dark film noir in a world of excessive greed, lust, violence and betrayal. Sin city is violent yes, its shocking, but tasteful in keeping with the tone of the book and the vision o Frank Miller who co-directs. This is a movie which oozes style and every character is brilliantly etched. Make up ur own mind Mr. Reviewer, thats what ur being paid for. Anyone can ask their friends for an opinion. Are you a blog writer or a film critic?

Sins Galore
by nick mosse on Apr 03, 2005 12:07 PM

Who cares if the chap who penned the article doesn't want to see the movie?

The blood and gore we see on screen is contrived. In everyday life we shut our eyes to the real horrors - the people starving around us, the helpless ones jumping in fron of traintracks; and we shut our eyes. We See it first then choose not to look.

So Sin City is a piece if cake. Bring it on, let me see what kind of statement Miller has made on the wretched animals we are.
