this is realy matter of suprise and shame 4 a industry which has given the movies like ardh satya, ek ruka hua faisla, and most recent teen deewarein that we are still looking for mature viewers. this may be because of the addiction of masala movies being feeded to us by some of the substandard production houses with big directorial tag like yash chopra. but still there r few like ramgopal verma who constantly experiments with ideas and their approch to break the ice burg
Yeah thats a good write up.. one of the movies i remember where the directors did not hesitate to end "differently" was khaki where aishwarya rai was eventually shown as a negative character and they did not have her changing her mind for "love", atoning for sins etc etc..Was one of many good points about that movie...
Really 'Sadma', that kamalashan and sreedevi movie, deserved a mention in your write up.It had a completely out of order ending which is really not expected in our run on the mills hindi movies. The twist at the end of the movie was just unbearable.
A film ends badly when the climax is not just unexpected but inexplicable. I agree the climax in most movies is formulated, but then these films are formulated anyways. They dont seem to concern themselves with originality. while this is true it is also not a good thing to be "different" for the sake of being different. Characters doing a complete roundabout in personality kills the film just as much as the villain-cop-marriage routine.
You'd probably have good endings if everybody was allowed to customise movies to suit their own whims. There are always ways to end a movie, and most aim to have the interest of the majority. But as a director, or as a scriptwriter, I am guessing, you imagine the story to end in a particular manner. Its, ofcourse, their fault that they didnt seem to see the ending the way the junta would have liked it, but then they probably liked it that way. Obviously, if you are somebody like Karan Johar, any movie you make would contain all the right ingredients to make the majority happy, and the remaining wonder why in god's name do we have to sit through this? So, considering I am allowed to make my personal opinion here, :-), I feel, the endings of movies should be the way the people who made it, wanted it to be. This, in turn, would also stop people who have got a really good story, not convolute it to so that its got mass appeal. But unfortunately, since making money ranks high on their needs, they end up destroying what might otherwise have been a good product. And ya, for me, a gr8 ending would be something shocking and totally unpredictable than "happily ever after..."
Hey! Teen deewarein had a rock solid ending! Probly the author did not understand what was going on... Spoiler ahead! Those who have not seen TD dont read this! Naseeruddin actually lies that he did all this to save theothers... The author shud see the final scene between Juhi and Naseer to verify this!!
