He didn't live to fulfill his own dreams
by Bhoopalan on Jun 09, 2012 07:38 PM

In spite of all the success and some few failures, people are judged in sum by their efforts in creation of things that ever last and impact the society many decades after his demise! Yes, Guru made it as a Guru only and made those master classics that survive even today with great appreciation by people! But he could not live more due to the social stigma he carried by personal life coupled with some avoidable failures in the professional life which made him to decide for a deep sleep on that October night, 1964! Nearly 48 years gone, he lives so strongly with great fraternity in Indian and abroad, makes him a legend!

AT last

Guru Dutt though highly acclaimed was definitely a sensitive person. In a way, he was also ahead for his times to make such memorable masterpieces. Whatever, it is sad to loose someone like him, it seems that he had already planned to end his life.

great loss...more than most ppl realize.

IMHO, If I were to pick any one person who
could have made a bigger impact on the future of Bollywood, it would be Guru Dutt. His demise is perhaps
the biggest avoidable tragedies in Bollywood (Madhubala/Meena Kumari come to mind too).

Guru Dutt was ahead of his times.
Pyaasa, Kaagaz ke phool, Sahib biwi aur gulam, chaudvi ka chaand you name it...wow !

His movies were thought provoking unlike his successful contemporaries like Raj "Overrated" Kapoor. RK gets more credit in defining "positive" Bollywood trends than he deserves. In addition, Guru Dutt
was a good actor too (I think most ppl agree RK was a below average actor).

In short, I think if Guru Dutt had survived his personal problems, we would have a great number of classics to talk about, as opposed to a number that you can count on your hands (and toes if one is generous). Even more importantly, over time, it would have inspired younger directors to make better movies and created a market for such movies.

I guess we will never find out :-( .

-antar.
