Totally different

OK, first of all, everyone who keeps talking about how they think the chris columbus movies were better needs to remember one thing: it's not that they're better, its that they're different...they were closer to the books, true, but as books get longer, it becomes more difficult to make movies out of them...also, the first two films were filmed from a very jaded perspective...there was no real artistic depth to them...Alfonso Cuaron's film may not have followed the book exactly, but it's got a lot of things that the first two dont have...it's not so much about the story as it is about the characters themselves...harry finds himself growing up, and his world gets less innocent as he gets older...the film is much richer and has more depth than the first two...the hogwarts grounds seem so much more fitting to me...i was a fan of Harry Potter long before the movies came out...Cuaron's vision of hogwarts is, to me, much more accurate...and plus, the kids can act! Case in point: fred and george...

A good story wasted
by Udipta on Jun 15, 2004 01:56 PM

The much awaited movie doesn't meet the expectations. Though the people who have not read the book may likeit, but people like me who had the chance to read the original book will find the ommisions and distortions disheartening. It becomes very difficult at times to follow the movie. I still don't understand why the director made the movie of such a short length. It wouldhave been really good if he would have made the movie of 3 hours duration if he considered it infeasible to make it in two parts of atleast 2 hours each.
I don't know what will happen to the next installment "Harry Potter and Goblet of fire" as it will be a gross injustice to the story even if it is made in two parts of 2 hours each. This movie I watched because of the good impression created by the previous two installments. But I don't think similar hype will be there for the next movie in the series after people get confused with this movie.

Shromona Mukherjee
entertaining, yet disappointing
by Shromona Mukherjee on Jun 13, 2004 02:13 AM

Personally..as a harry potter fan....I feel that the third film is a very dismal portrayal of the third book...which, according to me, is a fantastic book. The most important scenes are left out, and this much awaited film turned out to be far below our expectations. Perhaps those who have not read the book will find the movie fantastic, but the magic that was created in the book, has been lost to the dark, dull colours of the film. The emotional aspect of the characters has been totally overlooked, and the film ends rather abruptly, and with lots of questions unanswered. All in all, it's a film that is entertaining, but could have done much better, and ultimately lets the book down. Perhaps the harry potter hype will sail this movie through and it'll turn out to be yet another blockbuster, and I sincerely hope it does, but I also hope that the next movie has more to offer than this one.

Dumbledore

i thought Harry Potter Movie was exemplary. Certainly the best yet. They changed a lot of the scenery though and one more thing. Is there anyone out there who wouldn't mind seeing Ian Mckellen (Gandalf...Lord of the Rings) as Dumbledore? He would have been awesome! Just a thought.

Hyped movie..worth the Hype?????
by Angel on Jun 11, 2004 06:24 AM  | Hide replies

The much awaited movie "Harry potter 3" would actually be one of the most let down movies of its times. Just when the books get interesting with each part, this new director decides to completely ruin it.

With a complete new hogwarts setup, which is not what we picturise when we read the book and an absolute no connection scenes. What happened to the main plots of the movie??Why the extra unwanted additions??

it seems to me that as the books get interesting, the movie gets worse. The beauty of Chris Columbus in the 1st 2 movies was completely ripped apart. This book was undobtedly the best i have read in the HP Series, but now after seein this movie, i feel completely let down!

My husband who has never read any HP books couldnt understand a head or tail of the movie. Thanks to me he realised what was happening.

The new dumbledore, should i think see how the old one played his part, and imitate it. When the movie is made in series, one must stick to the similar patterns. If the new directors dont understand, I think its best they sit and watch the LOTR Triology. May be then we can get the Harry Potter effect we all visualised whilst reading his AMAZING books!

I completely agree with you. I went to the movie with high expectations and assuming the similar standards set by HP1 and HP2 movies. However this was total let down. If I have enough money I would pay that Alfonso Guy not to direct the Goblet of fire. Especially the book is so wonderful and by far the best of all HP series.

by carishma on Jun 09, 2004 10:06 AM  | Hide replies

i am a huge hp fan and i have read all the 5 books more than 5 times
i saw the film with my friends and did not like it as much.
i have to say that the film did not live up 2 its expectations.
the ones who had not read the books could not understand it and the ones who read the books found it boring and not as good as the book.
the interesting parts were deleted and the end wasnt showcased 2 clearly
i think it could have been better but the performances were no doubt out of the world.
luv
bye

I was satisfied by the film. A little surprised at the dramatic changes such as the new location of the Hogwarts castle and Hagrid's home, but aside from that I think that the Actors are doing excellent job so far.
