I don't think it's such a big deal that he's eating hamburgers in the movie. What's that have to do with anything? He ate soy burgers for the scene. Also, the movies doesn't specify what religion kumar is in the movie. For all we know, his character is christian, and it doesn't matter. Just watch the movie and relax. He reminds me of a lot of my friends. As for his name, i know a lot of Indian people who have americanized their names to avoid confusion. I also know people of other ethnicities that have done the same. No one told him he had to do it, so who cares?

nice movie
by Dhiraj Joshi on Aug 10, 2004 03:14 AM

I watched the movie a few days back. I think it is a great teenage/youth/college comedy. Young boys and girls will utterly enjoy it. It should'nt have anothing to do with being vegetarian/eating beef. I am studying in America and many of my Indian friends here eat beef. What's the big deal. Its a personal issue. Enjoy the movie for the fun of it.
All the best Kal Penn

Stop prpogating cliches
by Shekhawat on Aug 02, 2004 09:52 PM

Hi,
Whats with these comments about food entering a movie review? Not watching a movie just because it shows a Hindu eating a hamburger and posting these comments, just propogate the stereotype of the leaf eating Hindu. I mean, who cares? Its a good movie. Period. Go watch it and enjoy it. Whats the need to get all hung up on something thats so trivial. Besides, I am a Hindu, and I just love eating beef and hamburgers, but that does not make me less of a Hindu or an Indian. People commenting on Hinduism should know, Hinduism is way bigger than what kind of food you eat, or what you wear, and thats what makes it great. Enjoy the movie. Some people will deliberately take an offence. Too bad for those losers. With such rigid orthodoxy, they would feel more at home being an Islamic Taliban.

leave religion out of it
by lgaur on Jul 27, 2004 05:52 AM

I don't know if religion and food should be the problem here. How many Indian kids act so silly. Majority of the Indian kids I have seen are successful (academically) yet fun loving (meant to say not nerdy) and respectful like they are (or more than) in India. I was disgusted with the Guru and this one seems just as silly. I really would like to see a good movie representing real Indian life style. I am glad Mitr and Bend It Like Beckham reflected that and rescued Indian Image.

Yes, but more than that I get to play a title character. When did it ever happen last in Hollywood for an Indian actor?
I may be wrong. But didn't a very handsome Shashi Kapoor act opposite Hayley Mills in a moderately successful love story A Matter of Innocence
a k a Pretty Polly ?
Harold and Kumar should have a big opening though
with a solid backing and promotion from the studio releasing it. And the script is the type that will appeal to the youngsters who make up the largest segment of the American and Canadian box office.

I am very sorry to say this but I believe you all are out of your minds. Where on earth do you all find any relevance of the article to someone being a vegetarian or a Non- Vegetarian. Please stop the crap.Movies like these are meant to be pure harmless fun and for Godsake lets treat them that way. Moreover I have seen the trailer a thousand times and I just cant wait to see the movie. U guys go n see that it has nothing to do with these cliches that you guys had been fighting about. I hereby take the chance of wishing Kal Penn all the very best for the future. I have seen you American Desi and am a fan since. Do good work n enjoy life in NJ.

I think that if you're a Hindu, or a person who isn't a vegetarian and you're not gonna like this movie cuz it's about Harold and Kumar going to White Castle, that's really stupid. Not every single person who claims they're Hindu are vegetarians.

I personally really want to see this movie cuz A) It seems so funny and B) There's an Indian guy playing one of the main roles. Indian people face a lot of racism in America and for an Indian person to get a huge role in a movie here is amazingly.

I don't think it's odd to change your name because most Asians in America change your name. It's just so you fit easier into society, and when you're in the media, you get exposed to all types of people and if you want to be liked, you have to change. At least he didn't change his legal name, or something. Not that I would mind, but it's not and Indian thing to go that far. And as for Ash, well, she's going to be popular no matter what because she has to be one of the most beautiful girls in the whole world. As for a little known actor like Modi who quite isn't the most hottest guy ever (no offense), he needs to change if he wants to be real big.

Just my opinon!

what?
by hmm on Jul 19, 2004 11:18 PM

Hamburgers? Beef? I don't think many Hindus would like the film considering its about Hamburgers. I, for one, am one of thos Hindus.

The fact that you had to change your name speaks volumes about the lack of tolerance Hollywood (and the American people) shows to non-whites. Does Aishwarya think she will because a star with a name that white people can't even spell, let alone pronounce? This this subtle racism is in other places too. Call center workers are forced to change their names to American/Christians ones. Would any American do that for an Indian? Would a John change his name to a Kumar for Indians? Yet we have to do it for the Americans . . . .
