I am thankful that Bachchanji at least is not clambering upon the "Scramble-to-Hollywood-bandwagon." The problem with "Bollywood" is that almost every single person, down to the last man, is in it not because of any special faculties of his but simply because of the overbearing nepotism the industry is steeped thus. People like Kareena Kapoor who don't have an ounce of talent in their entire body think it is their birthright to "act" (aka wear western clothes and twenty layers of makeup and prance around amongst trees) in "movies" (which seem to me more like fashion shows where "designers" can model their western junk on shameless women). As a result, they take absolutely no pride in the Hindi film industry, and percieve it as little more than a stepping stone into Hollywood. The fools are in it for the money and fame, nothing more. Those serious actors, however, like Amitabhji, who had to struggle against the prevailing current in order to achieve a position in the industry, are the only ones not running off to Hollywood. All the pampered star-children who couldn't act if their lives depended on it, however, are begging at Hollywood's door.

Whatever role given by Hollywood i think for some actors it is right but not for Big B. They might give you a better role to play as James Bond Father also....

We indians should really be proud that our country is not being decimated by hollywood movies...
Yes Bollywood has come a long way and now it is widely viewed by not only the indians but also by many people in the world spreading across different countries.

But lets not get carried away from the fact that and bollywood is still not the number one industry in the world by any stretch of imagination.

karthik reddy.... london

We should see to it that Bollywood dethrones hollywood and should make sure that piracy is completly eradicated so that Bollywood will be the ultimate one day

bhagbhan

The film bhagbhan's story is same like a telugu film of late stalwart N.T.Rama Rao's movie BADI PANTULU released @in 1972.It was a big hit those days.Glamour heroine Sridevi was a child artist in that film. She played the role of grand daughter of N.T.Rama Rao.The BHAGBHAN is more than 99% remake of BADIPANTULU.Not at all a new concept.

reply to Mr.Bachann's interview
by anil on Dec 23, 2004 05:27 PM  | Hide replies

Mr.Bachann,
u said hollywood will take indians to act in their films only if we play a bigger role in their country?...do u know that half of the US software market is run by indians...do u know that a indian is a governor of a state now ? do u know that most of the toppers at MIT and STANFORD and CORNELL are indians who go their to do postgrad...
the reason i feel they dont take us in their films is that indian actors overact..none of the actors know the meaning of conveying a feeling without opening their mouths or shedding tears..that is the reason not because we dont play a part in their society..what abt Manoj.N.Shymalanan...he is of indian origin..and he plays a big part in their industry..let me tell u something..america is a land that only looks at talent..nothing else..its not like bollywood where superstars sons and daughters act in movies though they dont a minute bit about acting...i hope the rediff site send this message across to u..
thanking you,
Anil

No. First of all, there is no Indian-American governor in the US. "Bobby" Jindal lost. He was also Christian. A Hindu wouldn't have a chance in hell of winning an election.

Also, Indian actors have practically no chance in Hollywood, either in front of or behind the camera. I recall reading in an interview with Shekhar Kapoor that Hollywood bigwigs don't trust Indians behind the camera - simple as that. Still, exceptions like M. Night Shyamalan (notice how he hides his first name and changed his middle name?) and Shekhar Kapur have been able to combat the discrimination. Recognize, however, that both these men are BEHIND THE CAMERA, NOT ON SCREEN. Indians have no chance in front of the camera. Why would a white man want to see a story with an Indian actor when an American would be just as suitable? Americans can't relate to Indians. That's why we have no chance in Hollywood. Kalpan Modi had to change his name to Cal Penn before he got "Harold and Kumar." One Indian woman I know trying to gain entrance into Hollywood tells everyone she meets that she's SPANISH. Otherwise, she doesn't land any roles. There is no space in Hollywood for Indians.

Indian Cinema
by ritumaheshwari on Dec 23, 2004 05:09 PM

I agree with Mr Bachhan when he says Indian Cinema should not be called Bollywood. Our cinema is dignified in the story content and it is closer to the reality. But it is our society which is bent towards western idea in everywalk of life leave alone cinema. (Otherwise how will we justify our religious beliefs being called Hindu Mythology while we have Christian Philosophy & Islamic Philosophy. Why are our names having an extra "a" at the end Eg: Rama instead of Ram.)
Till recently there was no unwarranted skin show and our movies were family oriented. But today heroines are ready to drop their clothes at any moment.
Our cinema today is technically better product and film makers are experimenting with different stories. Hats off to them. We have some super talents in all aspects of cinema.
And ofcourse I dont feel people like Aishwarya can make a big difference in Hollywood? Well except for Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanaam & Taal, has she made any difference to our cinema anyways?
So lets salute to the rich history of our cinema and wish its engineers to take it to the new heights.

He is correct
by Saurav Kasera on Dec 23, 2004 05:01 PM

I think Amitabh is correct when he says that why will the Hollywood take us lest we play important part in their cultural arena. In fact, I feel that why should we crave for Hollywood roles as has been done by some of the well known faces of Bollywood. I think that's cheap. U should be proud to have a fan following of one of the largest country of the world. When u crave for Bollywood roles, I think u indirectly insult the Indian audience. If they want to work with u, they will come to u. I would seriously request the so called stars not to lose their dignity and that of the Indian audience by making themselves SO LOW .
