After having watched this film 5-7 times in the last one year I can say that this is one of the most original and well conceived films in Indian cinema.
Ashutosh Gowariker does a great job at depicting India's social problems such as caste system and illiteracy. Credit must go to him to have extracted excellent performances from the whole cast and particularly the protagnist of the film Mohan Bhargav played by superstar Shah Rukh Khan. After the super success of Lagaan Ashutosh could have made a much bigger film in terms of cost budget, star cast and story, but he has made a truly memorable film.
The portrayal of Mohan in the film is one of the best performances by Shah Rukh. I loved his performances in Baazigar and Devdas but this is definately a great one.
The back ground score and music by A.R.Rahman is one of the best I have heard from Indian cinema. The songs and background scores are apt for the various situations and Rahman is truly wonderful at his work. Overall, a great experience.

Not a original idea by Ahsutosh or Sathya. Plot is ripped off from award winning Kannada movie called Chigurida Kanasu based on a novel by Jnanapeeth awardee Dr.Shivaram Karanth. What is shameful of bollywood biggies is that even when they blatantly copy, they fail to acknowledge. lowly lives they are? And Sathya had the gall to say he worked on the story for 20yrs in Bengaluru during a talk show!!! Disgusting person.
the man of great Personality . No where in the move we find that the SRK is acting just a lay man came down from NASA and show why not India can grow ..... we cannot say in words .... better than seeing a movie .... it tell and prove a lot ... who has settle down in other countries ..... .., Why? not you be the 1 like SRK
Swades is best movie of 2004...the film is simply very realistic in a sense and best movie of shahrukh I guess performance wise without any histrionics.
I think Swades was one of the best movies I've seen. Its Shah Rukh Khan's best performance ever. Its definitely better than the other masala movies. It definitely has a good storyline.
I totally disagree with the rediff review... I think swades is the best movie of the year. Noble intentions, well knit, ....
Even if u call it a moral science lesson, i wud say that the lesson was good and interesting. It kept the audience adhered to their seats for 3.5 hrs...
I think that swades is the best of all the movies i have seen till date. Shah rukh is mind blowing in this movie. This movie is also inspirational for youngsters like me.I just love the movie and also feel that this movie deserves a national award
Hi! Well I have'nt seen the movie as I study in Australia but started liking this movie as I think this movie relates to every Indian who work or study abroad. It always reminds us about our roots.Whatever we do, where ever we do it but the rooots should'nt be forgotten. The only portion I saw in the movie was its casting which I saw in the Plane when I was coming to Australia.Well seeing casting itself reminded me of my country so much. But I have heard from every singl eperson that the movie is really nice.I hope to see this movie very sooon. The music of the company is very gud especially the song called 'YEh jo desh hai tera". As I have'nt seen the movie so I dont know how was Sharukh acting in it but I'm confident that he must have done his best.Well I wish Sharukh on his 40th B'day & hope to see some really gud work of him in future as well.Keep it up.
Sorry I checked in late.. but after readin one of the most unimpressive movie reviews.. i must say.. Rediff.. get some better writers. 'Swades'is one of the finest movies I've seen. Yes, it is a bit lengthy, the narrative is slow paced and the editing could have been better, but that doesnt take anything away from the overall gr8ness of the film. The director needs to be applauded for having the courage to go ahead and make a socially responsible film on such a budget, nd make a film true to its spirit, without succumbing to commercial pressures. To call it a 'giant moral science lesson' is simply undermining its value as a film. It tells a story with utmost sincerity. Can the writer xplain how Gowariker could have conveyed such an important message, without 'preaching'.. ridiculous. The movie is a wonderful amalgam of social relevance and artistic sensibilities. It has a beautiful literary resonance, which speaks both literally and metaphorically about a man's journey towards his homeland, the abode of the inner peace and harmony he seeks. The movie exudes beauty in many subtle ways. Just for the record, Mahesh Aney's 'unimpressive cinematography' won him a National Award.
