the music of Lakshya is awsome. How could some1 think it lacks punch!! This is the only review that is saying this. Clearly your review undermines an excellent abum.

Hurriedly done?

Well, I agree that the music of Lakshya is nowhere near DCH, but seen as an individual album, it is a fine album.

I found the review a trifle half-baked. The interlude in Main Aisa Kyon Hoon is ripped off from the theme of Qurbani. Kitni Baatein, which sounds quite Rehmanish, is simply the best song of the album - great vocals, great music and great lyrics. Separation is amazingly moving and its charm is its simplicity with the simple use of the piano. Kandhon Se Kandhe is nowhere near Sandese Aate Hain, but it's surely better than the LoC songs as a patriotic number. I guess you should give more due to S-E-L. In my opinion, the album gets a 4/5. And it's the best album of 2004 so far along with Meenaxi (I believe Yuva is hyped).

- Raj.

reviewing without expectation

"So is the music of Lakshya better than Farhan Akhtar's debut film, Dil Chahta Hai?"

There itself you prove the ignorance to the real significance of good music in Bollywood movies. It is not a marketing stunt to get attention from MTV before the movie's release (though this seems to be used quite often)...rather it is the complement of the storyline in the movie, at times expressing what scenes don't and leave an impact beyond the end of the movie. For example, Mitwa from Lagaan still brings back the feeling of the motivational discourse of Bhuvaan.

So, to expect a score 'better' than Dil Chahta Hai, is quite subjective. Do you want a dance number better than Koi Kahe, or a better friendship number than the title Dil Chahta Hai, or a better loneliness song.

"Lakshya is not all that inventive.". BUT, this is where Lakshya is inventive. Unlike the Johars and Chopras, the Lakshya team have not followed the formulas of their previous success. Instead they have brought forward a score that will match the movie, rather than provide a eye-and-ear-candy.

Explore and imagine, how each song, will be on the screen. The value of the film and music, has gone up..

-Ricky

Lakshya....

The music of Lakshya was one of the most-awaited ones, and it disappoints badly. The songs are very tepid and one expected a lot more from the Dil Chahta Hai team. Maybe, and hopefully, the songs would feel better after we see them on screen in the movie.

Great observation and perception Ricky. I agree with you that songs must not be judged as a separate entity altogether, without even realising the relevance of the song with the theme of the movie and each scene. The examples you have cited are perfect(especially Lagaan) and i would like re-emphasise that the songs in a movie are of course meant to entertain but primarily to highlight an important mood or theme of the movie so that it is etched in the minds of the viewers an listeners.
