Not to worry - you havent missed anything spectacular! Its just the hype!
Gotto remember that its the first time India would be presented on the International scale on the Musical medium. India was shown in bad light with slums, lawyers, corruption, underworld and Bollywood. Meera Syal, who writes TV episodes like Goodness Gracious and Kumars.... takes the credit for the wafer-thin story and predictable plot. Pity no-one told her thats it not a TV episode but a $14 million project. Maybe Gurinder Chadda (of Bend it Like... fame) would have been a wise choice.
The muscial was promoted on the name of A R Rahman, who sadly falls flat in terms of the contribution. He plagiarised his own compositions and put them in the musical (with English lyrics).
With a budget of £14 million - a better product could have been churned out. Andrew Llyod Webber has just managed to save his skin on this one and needless to say he was definitely taken for a ride (Shekhar Kapur included!)
Walked out of Victoria disappointed and £25 down the drain.
