err..it's not "to sleep with enemy"..it's "indecent proposal" . And as far as copying is concerned, I defer with you. Yes , agreed that in Hollywood also movies are copied but not as high as 60%. Check out the animation movies like Shrek, Finding Nemo, checkout scifi like Matrix, checkout dumb and dumber, checkout 'the others'..you name a genre and it has excellent pieces of movies being made today also..there is lot of creativity involved in it. While in bollywood there is hardly 1 "original" movie in months that has no songs, no script, no music..nothing copied from somewhere else! We too can make such movies albeit with little low budget but for that our industry ppl need will and readiness to hardwork as required in any other profession. Unfortunately most of them lack it..and few who have it in them are sidelined due to lack of support.

Nice article.

The impunity with which this is done SHOCKS me to the bone.

It so blatantly reflects the flimsy thin moral fabric of the society we live in. And no legal system can correct this unless the people themselves are willing change and rise above the abysmal levels to uphold the high morals they thoughtlessly chant (praan jaaye par vachan na jaye) day in and day out.

Writers Guild Of America was established to protect against such shameless abuse. Perhaps in India such a association may help the cause of the directors.

Set an example by imprsionment of some of these copying self professed "geniuses" and it will seep into the psyche.

Right to copy...
by Parmeet on May 22, 2003 01:44 AM

Its true that many of the 'Desi' works is a straight lift from Hollywood. But did anyone notice that some of the 'Firangi flicks' are *inspired* by the Indian Cinema. For instance, The Parent Trap (based on hindi film 'Do Kaliyan' with Neetu Singh as child artist), then The Bachelor (story line similar to Naseeruddin Shah's 'Malamaal').
So we see that its a two way trade.

let's not care about them
by vijay on May 22, 2003 12:51 AM

Well making movies is all about creativity not about business. well business again is creativity. the ppoint he who wins is one who is has originality in him. Actually people who copy others creativity are not worth talking about and i think we aare wasting our time discussing about such people and we are giving them importance that they don't deserve

better option
by Saurabh Singhvi on May 22, 2003 12:35 AM

well if copying is what they have been doing all these years why not just use a better idea from a good novel in coordination with the writer himself!! Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings are the biggest examples seeable. That'll at least eliminate the repitition that has been going on for all these years.

out-of-court settlement
by Deepster on May 21, 2003 11:24 PM

Out-of-court settlement is quicker rather than being dragged on thru court especially indian court system. Lesser lawyer costs (important in US!) plus quicker recovery of money and resolution.
Also a prolonged court case means Ms Bradford will have to keep on making trips to India.
There is no question that Sahara will have to pay. It is how much and when.

Plagiarism and its seeds in Bollywood!!!
by Vivek Ranjan on May 21, 2003 11:20 PM

As unfortunate as it might be, I treat the recent Barbara Taylor Bradford issue as a blessing in disguise. Most of these people in Bollywood are big cheaters. They lift entire movies and give credits to themselves...sometimes in order to be politically correct, they will say 'only certain scenes are copied...' I would much rather have someone making an authorized copy of a flick or a TV serial as opposed to this dishonest method. It brings utter disgrace to everthing Indian, it is how people start having preconceived notions about our country.
I think there should be some united front that simply boycotts every movie...once the big bucks stop rolling in, I am sure the producers will get a hit and try to mend their ways...
Plagiarism has reached such a point today, that guys like Bhappi Lahiri are winning cases...that guy who has copied music virtually everytime, and now Anu Malik thinking about suing the makers of Moulin Rouge for including Chamma Chamma without his consent...hello, what the hell are you talking about...do you ask every artist when you lift their soundtracks and churn them as yours...in Hindi!!

Boycott this industry - that's what we need!! Plain and simple!!!

We have so much available from history and highly rich literature from so many regional languages that we don't need to copy stuff from others. Lagaan and Aankhen are the recent examples. Still I don't know what exactly is wrong with our folks in Mumbai -(:
