You've had a bad day at office Deepa...
by Aayan on May 20, 2003 07:27 PM

Deepa,
Armaan is an effort by a person who is trying her best to churn out something diffrent...than sweet cushy mushy love stories ,which makes many of us diabetic by now ! If yo had it in you - go ahead and direct a film and prove it.Lets see you direct a film.?! Lest you land up making a fool of yourself like Khaled Mahmood did.I recall the article by Subhash Ghai on Sunday Times, critiquing Fiza- he said- it is easy to conceptualise but difficult to deliver.A film maker has to have the right "vision" of how he/she wants his film to be understood by the audience.I think Honey has done well there. And please - "Kya Kehna" was a hit - with a decent storyline,so don't riddicule it.
If at all one has to criticise Armaan -I felt,it could ve been more well edited, and Amitabh's character could've been of a longer duration. They should ve heightened the tension by having a countdown backdrop, like 6 months to go,and the Doctors comming up with some campaign to fetch the money before deadline.La Lagaan -giving it back to the bad guys - in a "proper" way.

Request to people who read this :"I am not "sponsored" by the Armaan team, the feelings are genuine."! :-)

how can this be aflop. I am strugling to get ticket in my nearby theatre since this released but without black nothing.
Apna AB has to be great. I haven't seen the movie but know that he would have given total paisa vashul performance. Hence I blindly buy the ticket when he is in the starcast.Once he is in a moview why to discuss other aspect like direction, story blah blah....

bad trailer,good movie
by karen on May 20, 2003 06:18 PM

As a foringer I find the movie trailers in the Indian cinemas very long and telling too much. Armaan is a good movie - but the trailer tells too much of the story. Good filming - especially the sceen with the handhold camera makes a dramatic effect.

armaan a review
by ashutosh kaul on May 20, 2003 05:50 PM

amidst the present bunch of flop and useless stories armaan is a pleasant respite.with a scintillating story, cool direction and a commendable screenplay.armaan is a film with perfect inclusion of the required sequences at the required time.but alas such films with no "latka jhatkas "and the heroines not exposing are never a git at the box office. but it is a perfect story.

without understanding a word of Hindi
by karen on May 20, 2003 09:03 AM

I'm from Denmark and I watched the movie in Bangalore a few days ago without understanding a word of Hindi - and it was great! Now that I read what has been said about the movie I can see that I've missed a few things, but it's only little details. I found the filming and the music very good!! but in my opinion the main character should get himself a hair cut.

Nikhil Jadhav
Armaan
by Nikhil Jadhav on May 20, 2003 04:36 AM

This was the best movie made in Bollywood after Dil Chahta Hain. Even better than 2002 hit - Devdas.
Honey Irani clearly displays that she is equally good as a director as she is as a writer. The casting for the movie has been perfect. All the characters have perfectly etched out roles by the author. The screenplay by Javed-Honey runs at an optimum pace never too fast never too slow.

The performances are awsome from each of them. AB leaves a mark in the scene where he suffers a cardiac arrest. Anil Kapoor has done his one of the best roles so far (just like he was in Lamhe), he is excelent every time he's on the screen, weather it's comic scene with AB or Gracy or a face-off with Preity he is just too good. Gracy looks good and performs better than Lagaan. Preity leaves a lasting impression with her performance just like she did in DCH. Randhir Kapoor makes good come back in small but meaning full role. I even liked the performance from the guy who played Dr. Snajay.

The only down-side of the film is the music. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy truly dissappoint. Only one decent song - Preity's song. But I got my money's worth in thi movie.

This movie doesn't flash Guess or Polo outfits

Good review
by Pratyush Rai on May 20, 2003 12:30 AM

This is a good review. I dont know why so many people are obsessed with "good clean" movies. The reviewer is not here to comment on the "cleaness" of the movie, but instead on the quality of the movie. Also, its about time that Amitabh stops over acting and concentrates on good acting.

deepa has got it right, armaan is a let down...

Though with some endearing moments, I thought Armaan is an example of a talented ensemble cast being wasted on a script that has some glaring loopholes.

The situation of Amitabh succumbing to his earlier diagnosed heart ailment looked totally unbelievable and contorted. You would imagine that a doctor of his calilbre would carry a mobile phone even if he refuses to part with his dear car that breaks down most of the times. Atleast he could have taken a road where there was some chance of getting some help. The boy and his mother , if they had chosen to walk must surely mean that there would be a settlement nearby. Also trucks who drive a that speed would mean that there would be a road with some trafiic.

Also Anil Kapoor chooses the easy way out. If that was the way , then there would have been an attempt by Amitabh to atleast talk it out with Anil Kapoor. It would have been much interesting to see Anil Kapoor fighting his way and thus making his father's wish a reality by approved means.
MEANS CANNOT BE THE ENDS.

Also in a typical climax, Preity Zinta is almost forgiven by all and sundry even if she is the cause of a person dying.

Not done.....Shankar Ehsaan ..sad

Not a let down in terms of a Hindi film, but....
by proloy on Jun 16, 2003 02:43 AM
I read all the comments by readers, but interestingly the one I agreed with most came on the absolute last page. That a PadmaBhushan doctor driving a car does not carry a mobile phone is what sums it up best.

My 2 cents:

1)Amitabh:sincere,hardworking and it shows that he's trying to give his best.Great screen presence. But somehow he doesn't quite appear to be a natural actor.Of course, his voice is fabulous but it sometimes sounds as Amitabh's voice rather than the doctor's. Amitabh needs bigger roles, like the one in Aks,to really come on his own later. In cameos, well, he's not imcompetent, but not the most delightful either.Randhir Kapoor appears much more credible and natural.

2)Preity Zinta:good, but not the best I've seen of her.She has done almost a ShahRukh Khan act here,I'm afraid.

3)Anil Kapoor:competent and convincing except for his age.

4)Gracy Singh: easily the most underestimated performance.I don't remember too many other heroines in current cinema who look so good in a romantic role. Her portrayal of jealousy is exceptionally nuanced and simply charming. She did that in Lagaan (where she looked more beautiful),and a repeat here. Would love to see her more!

by Vids on May 19, 2003 02:07 PM

It seems our dear critic has got it wrong this time..Armaan is a simple, clean and well made film. Its not a great film but definetly worth watching for the performances of all the performers..

Big B..what can u say..Simply outstanding especially in his dying sequence..
