National Awards are strange
by Chaya on Jul 31, 2003 06:39 PM

Although this time it has been reasonably fair, Ajay and Konkana richly deserve it. Aparna Sen has done a fabulous job essaying a Tamil girl which not many ace tamil directors have done to date. The character of Meenakshi was very real and very convincing. But A.R. Rahman, again? for music, for what?, Kannathil was a great movie, had great acting (Madhvan, Simram, N.Das & Prakash Rai - he is not a Raj), great direction and what not. Other than Vellai Pookkal, which is very soothing, and Senyore, which successfully brought out the Srilankan spirit, all the other songs are failed experiments. These two songs are not award worthy either. Sundari- was irritating, lacks rhytm, melody or kiddish fun, cannot match up to songs from Anjali (Mani's children centric movie - 1990). Devaim Thanda Poove both versions start of okay, quickly loose balance miserably and comes out to be very jarring. What was ARR trying to do, a pitch shift (Shruthibedh?). The only thing saving the song is Mani's brilliant picturization. Vidai Kodu another jarring song. Devdas, of course a pathetic movie, should still have fetched the music award to Ismail Darbar. Great songs if you tolerate KK's voice.

National Awards - A Sham.
by AMJAD MARUF on Jul 29, 2003 09:20 AM

Congratulations to Ajay Devgan for winning his second National Award. But one could not understand the criteria for giving Devdas the award for the best film providing wholesome entertainment. Can the judges enlighten us as to what means wholesome entertainment for them. Devdas was all about an alcoholic lover who is morose in the whole film. There are no entertaining elements in the whole film so how does Devdas justify the wholesome entertainment factor. The film showed women in regressive manner and the protagonist an alcoholic loser who does not respect even his father. Does all this qualify as wholesome entertainment? The moot point to argue here is about the entertainment factor and not about quality or popularity of Devdas. Thankfully the best actress award did not go to Aishwarya Rai otherwise it would have been an insult to Konkana Sen who has given a brilliant performance in Mr and Mrs Iyer, which Aishwarya cannot even dream of giving. One also fails to understand the need for having so many categories for Best film awards like Best film, Best film providing wholesome entertainment, Best film for National integration, etc.

National Awards - A Sham.

Contd..2

Why does the National award have to emulate the popular film awards where special categories are created to satisfy the ego of superstars? And why are the jury members biased against regional films when it comes to giving awards for wholesome entertaining films. Do they mean to say that regional films are not entertaining at all and only Hindi films are entertaining? For the past 10 years only one regional film was given the award in this category. Needless to say even the National Awards have become a big sham nowadays. Many directors influence the jury and keep lobbying every year at the Centre to get their films a national recognition. It is surprising that the filmmakers and actors manage to meet the jury members considering the fact that the names of the jury members are kept secret till everything is decided. The concerned authorities should take immediate remedial measures to restore the credibility of the National Awards.

Oscar selection is biased and not done by experts ...
by Bhaskar on Jul 29, 2003 07:38 AM

couldnt agree more with Manivannan. A film like 'Kannathil Muthamittaal' would be appealing more to the international audience as it has the background of the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. It is a more mature and serious film than the just the glamour in Devdas. anyone watching the film will be able to get involved as the subject is universal; the film leaves a mesmerising effect on the audience due to the powerful portrayal by the child artiste Keerthana.

And as noted, most reports are focussed to the Hindi belts (in all areas of reporting) and dont report happenings as much down south. the quality of films sent to Oscar will improve only if it is selected by renowned film makers...
