When no film was doing good at the Box-Office, Andaaz Opened up well, despite the bad mouthing of all the critics it went on do well. Remember Movies are being Made for Money and business and not for critics.

deepa's a bad critic
by nomaan on Jul 24, 2003 05:00 PM  | Hide replies

i read her reviews in the deccan chronicle in hyderabad and i think she makes a very bad critic,i mean the way she criticises the movies be them good or bad.she tears apart the movie from the first frame to the last.a good movie like devdas was criticised by her so how do u expect the movie going crowd to watch a movie in the theatres when she gives so awful reviews.no hard feelings deepa but thats the truth.

I agree with you.For last two years I am reading her reviews on films hoping that something good will come out of her pen.But seeing negative points only in a film is her concept of rivewig a film. For her I think criticism means writing bad things.Great Deepa, keep it up.No body takes a serious look on such bad reviews. Her rivew for Bhoot was so bad that it was enough to make the film flop (if people would have taken her review seriously),but that did not happen rather Bhoot became a super hit.Deepa, start doing something else.Let others do film review.

nice article!
by sam on Jul 24, 2003 03:46 PM

thats a nice article but abt the trend of movies...i believe more then subject it depends a lot on treatment given to it...no matter what u make..if its a wel made movie ppl r gonna like it...thts why small budget movies have been doing well...as abt MPKDH- it was realy not treated well but still did well in US,canada,UK coz hrithik has good following and ppl r eager here to get something and the higher $ value helped distributors colect good colections here...chalte chalte also had a great opening here and in some cities it was launched among the main stream movies..so u cud see SRKs picture next to connery, arnold etc-it was kinda cool...and post intervel the movie shaped out realy well...so i think it all depends how u treat a particular subject.....doesnt mater u make a Lagaan or a Devdas or Chandni Bar-quality cinema is always gonna click

Good Points but Disagree on her reviews
by Krishna on Jul 24, 2003 03:19 PM

I disagree with Deepa. She is one of the most extremist and biased writer/critic I have come across. I have very rarely seen her praising something even atleast a part of something. MPKDH is a feel good movie agreed the expectations were more but must say it was one of the few feel good movies seen in recent times. However I do agree Andaaz was awful. Bhoot was spectacular. I would definitely say Chalte Chalte and MPKDH were feel good and nice enough for us to spend money on it. She was one of those who tore Abhishek to threads when he came in ..now when he is picking up has done amazing in MPKDH ..she does not say a word of encouragement. I think Deepa should be more optimistic in her articles than pessimistic. She definitely has brought out a good point but must say she needs to lend more credibility with her reviews and articles.

its time the directors learn from their mistakes n concentrate on talent than buisness...

I agree with deepa on the fact that box office is getting very predictable. Andaaz was an awful film no doubt, but again who are we to judge that. Its the lowest common denominator aka the junta which has made it a hit. I think the reason was probably that it got family audiences, especially lots of women in the theatres; coupled with good music. Agreed that its absurdist bollywood but its feel good escapist cinema, at the end of the day thats what still clicks with our audiences. Bhoot was not a run of the mill film, i think it was a very sucessful experiment. It was about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Thats what hitchcock considered the best suspense/horror movie are since people can identify with em.

Qayamat was a popcorn flick but a well made one hence clicked. The point is wellmade or directed movies with something new to offer are being accepted. Tried and tested formulas would also work if well treated. Thats what happened with chalte chalte, ishq vishq etc. MPDKH made a valiant attempt to be novel but failed miserably.

Hope others agree with me. Pls feel free to comment
