Why these redundancies of comparision?
by Borges on Jan 09, 2004 11:27 PM

Mr. Pais,

Although your reviews are good, why is there such a strong inclination every time to compare the actor's work here with the previous works? It's OK once or twice, but I see that the frequency is increasing day by day - Uma Thurman is compared to her work in Kill Bill with Paycheck, Ben Kingsley with his 'Gandhi' portrayal and 'House of Sand and fog'!! Each movie is distinct, and how do we expect to compare each and every role, and say this one is better or worse than the other? What relevance the characters of Gandhi and that of the Iranian exile have to be compared? Kill Bill and Paycheck are of two entirely different genres! Kill Bill is a pseudo-surreal narration and John Woo is a predictable churner of movies, although his movies don't fail to entertain. So what's the point in comparing Uma Thurman in both of those works? I'm not commenting, but just curious as to find is there some other way to remedy this redundancies!! It's like comparing every post-Baasha Rajinikanth movies to Baasha!

december films

It has been a remarkable month of films. I saw one good film after the other. All of them significantly different, yet hold their own and build intrigue. To name a few, thus far, I have watched House of Sand and Fog, which is as good (or may be even slightly better) as the book that its based on. Just after that I saw the Cold Mountain, and looks like Kidman and Zellweger may get their respective oscars again. Jude Law seems to have come of age with this film. He is such an underrated actor, more like Matt Damon. Both are extremely talented and versatile, yet less noticed, as comapred to lets say Russell Crowe & Tom Cruise. No regrets though as the two gave fascinating performances in Master and Commander and The Last Samurai, respectively. Again, very different & nice films. And most recently I watched the third in the Lord of the Ring triology- The Return of the King. It was a bit gross to my liking, yet the effects were superub. It did however remind me of "Chandrakanta Santiti" that I read about 12 years ago! It is such a delight to be able to watch such variety of films, rich in content and character. This weekend, I plan to watch Monalisa Smile. Great going Hollywood!
