Who cares...?
by Abhik on Aug 15, 2003 09:30 PM

Who cares whether KMG is a hit in the US or not?!
As long as the movie is appreciated in India and is successful here, why bother how the hell it is doing abroad? Movies in India are made keeping in mind the Indian audience...not for Americans or NRI folks.
So, let's appreciate the fact that KMG is the biggest hit of the year in India and stop finding faults or silly excuses to trash the film!!

The Phenomena called Hrithik is back
by S.Chand on Aug 14, 2003 07:41 PM

The Phenomena called Hrithik who made his debut in his father's film Kaho Naa.. is back with a bang right at the top. After Kaho Naa.. the audience rejected him in most of his films except K3G. But all the credit for K3G went to SRK and AB. The came the greatest failure of all, MPKDH. Naturally it was expected that KMG would get a poor openning. But to the surprise of all, it has opened with marvelous response at the B.O. and the Trade Pundits, by the virtue of their previous experiences, are already declaring the film as a hit. This can happen only with actors like Hrithik, who has the ability to run a film all by himself and rightly called The Phenomena.
The film KMG is s very good one. Hrithik's preformance proves all his critics wrong. A great reply to his critics.

what the hell??
by pavan on Aug 13, 2003 11:25 PM

the movie is fabulous..why on earth are we thinking about "non-indians"?? the film is made for indian families and not for american or nri's. it is good to see directors thinking abt our country rather than theirs, unlike subhash ghai and sooraj barjatya who want big bucks, and they forget what indian audiences need! for once guys be selfish abt india and not urself...

why can't u guys get your facts straight? will you turn and twist everything around to get a story? Anita Gates review is largely positive, she liked the movie and average reader reviews for the movie are 4.5 out of 5 stars! please get your facts straight the next time....this is ridiculous.

Indian films in USA
by Sharad Gadadare on Aug 12, 2003 07:08 PM

Arthur,

As much as you may say that only Ghai, Chopra, Barjatya, and Johar movies do well in the USA, it does not in any way prove that those movies are good movies. That's why, if you had said the same thing in a different tone, it would have done more justice to directors like Rakesh Roshan, Ramgopal varma, and others whose movies don't do well in USA.

Only reason I site in the success of the "Chopra, Barjatya, Johar" clan of movies (and Yaadein from Ghai), is that its a chocolate wrapped, dreamy, false, and assembly-line manufactured product. These movies lack all the ingredients which make a movie made out of the heart. They make their movies out of the sheer interest of making money out of USA/UK.

And that is precisely the reason they fail in India. USA viewers are interested in nothing but movies which please their own hearts and egos. And this above trio knows exactly how to do it. I really wish the US audience turns smart and kichs the butt out of the next release of any of these 3 directors. They are looting the public in broad daylight.

3 cheers to Roshan, Varma, etc for making good and different movies like Koi Mil Gaya, Bhoot, Darma Mana Hai, Mr & Mrs Iyer.

Sharad,
You are right. The NRIs for some reason seem to like all that Chopra bullshit about songs and dance and dresses etc. Something that I cant seem to associate with, dispite of having lived in USofA. That can be partly attributed to longing for home and enjoying seeing all those fancy desi dresses and marriage stuff.
To correct your statement, producers here should make movies for US audiences, NOT NRIs. This is where makes like Ram Varma, Nagesh Kukonoor will shine. US audiences definitely appreciate a smart, well done film. Movies like "Darna Manaa Hai" may do well there. Bhoot seems to crappy for the US audience. THe key is not to rehash what they have seen but offer them something fresh, smart and even perhaps with an Indian touch. NOT songs/marriage/dances..puleez.
Just check how John Woo was able to move from making Hongkong flicks to mainstream Hollywood. He has had mixed success in US but his Face-Off was great fun!

Target!!
by Indyamayflower on Aug 12, 2003 01:54 PM

Who is the target audience of the Indian film makers? Is it the Indian audience or the NRIs or the Americans? If it's the Indian audience- then why so much of hue and cry over an Indian film not doing well in International markets? Lets hope that this film becomes a hit in India and proves to be a milestone in Hrithik Roshan's career.
If you think people like Ghai, Bhansali, Barjathya are a hit in the US , then they are better off making films for these target audiences as their movies no longer pulls the strings of the Indian hearts. All those over-exagerrated versions of Indian lifestyle just doesn't click here in India.
