Fully support her idea.

One thing I fail to understand is that on one hand we shower our praises on Hollywood for making good movies, while on the other hand we insult our intelligence by watching the crappy movies of Bollywood. People have developed a psyche that entertainment only means a bouquet of song-dance numbers, high pitched melodrama and a plot, which is so confusing, that it disturbs your state of mind. All the while forgetting that a movie based on a good storyline and a fine script is more entertaining than the usual crap we get from Bollywood. For too long we have been served third rated stories from writers who don't have a faint idea about writing a story. It is high time, fine stories from writers like Mahasweta Devi are depicted in movies for a broader gamut of viewers.

Feel sad

Mahasweta Devi is a legend and it is sad that she needs to make such a statement to get her stories sold.
Looking at the quality of current Hindi/Bangla movies and knowing the quality of her works, any producer should jump for her works - which , besides carrying a very strong social message have a very mature storyline.
However, it is tough making them authentic - honestly, how many directors in today's India have the skills to make another "Mrigaya", "Pather Panchali", "Sadgati" or even a "Hajar Churasi ki Maa" ?

Respected Mahasweta Devi,
You must certainly do. But get into a special contract with the producer / director to get the movies released only after your legal approval so that the essence of your stories are not distorted. My best wishes. Regards.
Ms. Sriparna.

Good Idea
by Rama Krishna on Apr 24, 2003 03:19 PM  | Hide replies

Films are the best media in India and Mahasweta Devi made a good decision. But picturising them as they are may not be an easy task.
In the past many pictures have come and people always complain that they distorted the facts.
Indian spectators by default to do not like the "art movies". That is the reason why the movie makers add some commercial ingredients, which some times can spoil the entire theme.
I have seen many films with a good topic and theme in western media. People appreciate the cause and solution. Hence, i would suggest Mahasweta Devi to consider western film makers as well.

I agree with you Sriparna. The contract needs to be water tight.

I dont understand why producers shy away from such intelligent stories, considering them to b offbeat. Earlier it was some other kind of audience for such movies/serials...but now a days the viewership for such movies/serials is much more...movie Astitva being an example.
