1. Agriculture in India is fragmented. Dependence on agriculture should be brought down to about 20% of our population. 2. Marginal farmers and agricultural labourers should be given employment in industries and other sectors. 3. Entire agricultural land of the country must be brought under irrigation. 4. Mechanised and modern methods of farming, direct marketing facilities across the country, crop insurance and host of other measures should be taken to not just make farming viable but lucrative. 5. Waiving of agricultural loans is nothing but political move. It does not help the farmers in any way except give them temporary relief. He continues to remain poor as ever. In addition to the above, rapid urbanisation across the country will lead to prosperity in agriculture.
We have tried to import from INDIA and tried to do business. We found very few people in INDIA are honest. Everybody wants to become rich very soon. Cheating is rampant. This effects INDIA'S image all over the world. There is definetly good market for all products from INDIA but only few importers who are powerful control the market in different countries. There is a market and india should export more to make the farmers beneficiaries. Due to middlemen in the doemstic market farmers dont get a value they deserve.
I agree with the author. Also want to add that science-technology-internet are needed as well to obtain the full benefits for all. For example, soil fertility that is so critical for growing good crops sustainably can be improved by proper application of science only.
Farmers also need to change. Group farming or cooperative kind of farming is now needed to get benefits from economies of scale and reduce input costs. A 1-2 acre farmer has no bargaining power in the market.
The short-term palliatives like loan waiver are useful only to win or lose elections - these cannot address the agrarian crisis. A 20 year vision and courage needed to fully implement strategies that can bring lasting benefits to farmers and all concerned.
Farm loan waiver is only compensation of not offering remunerative price on the output of the farmer. First settling farm economy and then industrial economy should be attempted as consumption of Industrial product depends on agricultural health in India. Govt. service is less as well as pay is no comparable with the developed countries. However storage and energy sufficiency is precursor of all these.

Cut Pay to GovtMaadharChodhs (GMCs), Divert Money for Development
Nowadays many GovtMaadharChodhs (aka GMCs or 80% Gov employees) get pensions over 30K / pm, a gov peon or junior asst gets salary Rs 35K / pm, gov teacher 50k, lecturer Rs 1.5 lak, professor Rs 2 lak, etc.
I appreciate Modi's initiatives in collecting taxes--GST, Income Tax, etc--from hardworking people and businesses in the pvt sector, but what is the use if this money is paid as exorbitant salaries to 3% GMCs, of whom 80% are good-for-nothing fellows?
In pvt companies, only top 3% could be corrupt, but 97% employees have to work hard. In govt companies 80% are corrupt and / or laggard fellows.
GMC laggards, who eat up 10% GDP / yr, seldom work, but work very hard when there is scope for corruption. GMCs spend 80% time eating paan & spitting on walls, talking SexPoliticsAndNonsense, playing cards 2 hrs when lunch time is 1 hr, etc
GMCs have strong unions and often threaten nationwide strike if their exorbitant demands are not met.
Pay good salaries only to defense personnel (in active assignments); reduce salaries of GMCs to market-avg levels--stop salary revisions. Divert the money thus saved to improve primary education, English skills, healthcare and family planning among poor, SC, ST, MBCs, etc and to support poor farmers driven to suicide. HIGH SALARIES TO GMCs KILLS PATRIOTIC SPIRIT OF NON-GOVT HARDWORKING CITIZENS.
(Instead of Rs 1Lac /PM to a GMC, better pay 10k-to-10 pvt sctr hard-workers)

True. And Science-technology-internet are required as well. Soil fertility improvement requires science as well as usage of modern tools.
Next important step is group or cooperative kind of farming. Only this will provide economies of scale and lower input costs.
All in all the short-term palliatives like loan waivers will not solve the agrarian crisis but just help win/lose elections. A 20-year kind of vision and courage are needed to implement what is good for the farmers and all concerned.
Indians are wrong in thinking that all of problems will be solved with industry and business growth and employment, while we should simply think that only agriculture can solve all our problems which is a fact and all our concentration and priority should be towards boosting and safeguarding agriculture and strive for its growth, mainly all the policies and research and money should be pumped to agriculture on priority. Because if agriculture is boosted, automatically other industries also survive, food is available adequately and employment generation in mass scale happens and then nature is also saved and grown due to which overall development of any country happens. But agriculture is the last word in the minds of Indians and hence we deserve to suffer at all hands. And nothing is going to improve as long as politicians are there, so the only way left for Indians is survive themselves, either by earning in whatever way they can or live with limited means or starve till death.
