JLR & Maruti; the TATAs
by satinder singh on Jun 26, 2018 02:03 PM

I think someone has got it wrong
JLR was a shut company in UK which Ratan Tata took over and revived and went much beyond the expectations of the World Industry.
And this he did in a short period.
What Maruti/Suzuki done on the other hand. They started right here and had the first time advantage over any other manufacturer.
If Tatas had been allowed to make Mercedes cars in India in 1960 which Nehru did not allow due to Birlas and Hindustan Motors one would not have seen the Ambassador or the Padmini/Fiat for all these years
I think the person who is trying to put the Tatas down does not know how Tatas have always been on the receiving end at the cost of others including the Passenger Car, The Airline, etc etc etc.
Maruti came at time into India when the normal licensing laws were all done away with and in a sort of free economy initially supported by Indira Gandhi/Sanjay Gandhi and later by every government
Tatas have been around since 1869 and set up TISCO is Jamshedpur over 100 years back (1907) and the first steel ingot came in 1912
JLR is just part of the whole group - I dont think we can really evaluate the contribution of the TATAs to India and it is invaluable and enormous.
JLRs turnover is BP 24.2 Bn as compared to the group turnover of $ 130 Bn. Overall Tata group has contributed Rs 944,057 Cr in taxes to the government in different forms.
I am not sure if the criticizer of JLR is aware of these statistics.

Nationalism Plays a role

It makes Indian feel proud when top brands like JLR/Landrover company is owned by an Indian company, whereas we don't have the right to call Suzuki an Indian company although it is a number 1. car manufacturer in India.
