Upgrading IT system is the only answer. Install world-class IT like SAP and remove all manual inteferences. This scam happened because PNB's IT system was not linked to SWIFT system . They had 2 very good systems but isolated from each other. This gap was misused by the crooks. Also the SWIFT system is very complicated to master and only Shetty had mastered it completely. His 3 bosses were too lazy to learn the SWIFT system and hence happily provided their passwords to Shetty. This problem can also be solved by higher security levels
a) Recover 2 %PA from all categories of depositors,as SAFE DEPOSIT CHARGES, instead of paying any interest thereof. b) Restrict LAND & GOLD PURCHASE very strictly. c) Lend @ 3 % PA to all categories of borrowers. d) AWARD CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR ECONOMIC OFFENCES too. e) LOAN DEFAULTS to be treated as CRIMINAL OFFENCES. f) NO TRADE UNION NUISANCES in BANKING INDUSTRY. g) 50% cut in MANPOWER in all Banks & VERY STRICT AUDIT IN BANKS.

A couple of suggestions may be seriously studied and bring into practice.I am sure you must be knowing that any bank is neither give any guarantee of your lockers and except of One Lakh against your Deposit/Saving/Account. Please suggest where to keep your hard earned money? All these scams would not have been there if banks were not Nationalized. Let us hope and pray SBI does not fall in the same category like PNB.

This is simply an organised loot. Banks do not lend even few lakhs of Rupees even against 100% collatoral to MSME sectors!!

What is the punishment for the bankers who didn't recover Loan from Incoming Cheques but released money to the defaulting party after the incoming cheque brought money.It is done for small fellows.Why it had not been done for BIG FISHES R.POnnambalam
While all this is going on, it is pertinent to ask why similar actions are not being taken against the farmers who have borrowed tens of thousands of rupees and defaulted ? Their land should be confiscated and sold to recover money. Those who are landless-as most of them are-they should be sent to jail. In jail they would get at least two square meals a day which they hardly get. Even some medical treatment who knows(have they ever seen a doctor ?). The recovered money can then be given Mama-Bhanja as fresh loan so that they can give back old loan Rs one lakh crore or whatever. This may be given in cash in large suitcases to avoid complications that may arise with LOU or whatever.
