Buy my land then give me service

You put few points but not all points. It is all about corruption by businessmen. What govt is doing in regulating activities by businessmen? Why are they not regulating practices by all businesses? Why our previous theaters were not clean? Did you raised your concern at that time? Are multiplexes just trying to woo only rich people? Are you saying poor people should not come and sit beside you to disturb your ambiance? Please think about everybody in our poor country which is becoming poorer with these money minded businessmen. We need to fight for every wrong doing in this country thought they are giving us comfort.

Dont just threaten to close down.....

Multiplexes charge Rs 50 for a 1 litre mineral water, Rs 70 for a coke/pepsi, Rs 90 for a popcorn pack, Rs 120 for a couple of small samosa etc!! Outrageously high priced. We avoid buying food, but water becomes a necessity when we have kids with us. So we say, multiplexes, either charge water at at MRP, or if you are making loss due to this, please close down. We no longer care....

outside food in multiplexes
by raja aggarwal on Aug 24, 2018 04:01 PM  | Hide replies

The key issue is hygiene, ambience and comfort. When I go to a multiplex with my family I pay for all these apart from watching a movie. It's not only the movie but the entire package I am willing to pay for. In return I get a posh ambience to enjoy a movie screening with loved ones. The prices and profitability are incentives for taking risk while developing a multiplex. No profits means no incentive to develop multiplexes. Many of them are located in malls. They don't force us to buy their food. On the other hand outside food means I shall have to suffer different smells arisising out of different tiffin boxes like that of a fish, chicken, spicy vegetables, etc. Hygiene shall be difficult to maintain. In name of drinks people mix alcohol into different normal drinks-even juice and get drunk. The whole ambience goes out for a toss. It's like cheating the customer who is ready to pay more for an ambience. Like hotels or restaurants the SC observation holds good for Multiplexes too. They are being harassed so that they shell out part of their earnings to Babus and Political Satraps. I empathize with them because we middle class face this extortion now and then in our Great Democracy.

Nobody is fooling anyone. I run a business, I invest my money, and profit is the motive. Where does charity or socialism come into play here? Are we trying to say that a person cannot survive without junk food for 90 to 120 minutes? What next. Asking 5-Star hotels to cap prices? I guess if the government can't turn India into a 5-Star experience, turn it into a dump. Some logic that...

free water and clean toilets have to be provided
by Rajendra Gupta on Aug 24, 2018 03:47 PM

This is minimum legal requirements besides all statutory requirements like adequate parking , fire system ,emergency exits. The loot starts form the entry point where cars parking is charges 50 70 or even 100 .Then loot inside the multiplex.Free water never available anywhere .Why? Supreme court seems to have lost its sensibilities.
The best way is public boycott.Stop buying anything at these loot houses

Root Cause is High Land Costs
by king kong on Aug 24, 2018 03:38 PM

Nobody is addressing the root cause - which is ridiculously high real estate prices, and corruption/middlemen hafta associated with construction. The mall might have paid a high amount for the land and construction, which they try to recoup as high rentals from the multiplex, and the multiplex tries to recoup by profiteering and fleecing the hapless customer.

However, freedom to price does not give multiplexes a freedom to profiteer or do whatever they wish. If they do not go by reasonable pricing, the state has every right to intervene. Laissez fairse was never the policy in India, and if a businesses cannot run except without profiteering, it is better they shut down.

Prices should be fair
by Goutam Mazumder on Aug 24, 2018 12:39 PM

I agree that foods sold inside the multiplex premises should be the prerogative of the owner. Also checking all food items brought by the people from outside is not feasible. But the prices charged by multiplexes are no where near the prices in market. A 900 ml of Coke costs around 200 bucks but 2 liters of the same costs around 100 bucks outside. Similarly a Samosa costs around 60 in multiplexes but costs around 10-15 in a good eatery points.
This needs be checked.

charge reasonably
by brian crasto on Aug 24, 2018 10:33 AM

I agree with the writer. When goes to a fine dining restaurant we go for the ambience, hygiene, trained staff. So one has to pay higher for the services. Same applies for multiplexes. Multiplexes entails huge capital and to cover a part of the expenses has to cover by the food served in the cinemas. If one takes food from outside there is bound to be nuisance, littering and security issues. So multiplex have got a right to charge more. But at the same time they should charge reasonable prices. One thing others dont know that cooked food remains is destroyed
