When Development causes unrest
by shib sankar on Jun 29, 2017 12:55 AM

I visited Kalimpong and Darjeeling last month just before the start of the unrest. All the people I spoke to they thought their lives have improved significantly in last few years. Due to chief minister's regular visit and focus on developing tourism have brought great changes. Increasing popularity of Mamata has taken air out of Bimal Gurung whose mass appeal is much less than what it was for Ghising. TMC winning Mirik has irked him further. So they were looking for an excuse to stir the Gorkhaland issue again. When Govt. has declared that Bengali is an optional subject, still there was no abate to the unrest. If Gorkhaland is the key issue, why there was no noise for them for last few years. Its pretty clear that Bimal Gurung is after power and money and for that he doesn't mind risking the life and livelihood of the common people of the hills

BJP has a standing MP, who doesn't bother to visit there. He initially supported this split knowing fully that it may lead to breaking the nation. When media pressed him hard then the say, we have problem with the name "Gorkhaland". And his party supporters ( read internet goons) resorted to name calling the chief minister who made it a point to stay back till all the tourists are safely escorted out of Darjeeling
